No, actually, without the time penalty, Park would have won by 1 point. There was a 4 point penalty, so Tang won by 3

With 12 points komi :)

I once won a game in the European Ing Cup by 5 points, getting 14 points komi.

Cheers,

Either as Park or Tang, I'd feel unsatisfied by both games so far. From Tang's side, he let the first game go in the later part of the game, and lost on the board in the second game. From Park's perspective, he was behind the first game and won due to Tang's mistake, and lost the second game from the point penalty (and was also behind for awhile).

I hope that the break before October gives both players time to recover and play high quality games.

For the second game though, the only reason Park ended up "winning" on the board is because of time issues; Tang made many mistakes in endgame because he was trying to play fast so that he won't have to take a penalty. In fact, he would've gotten more points if he just took a 2 pt penalty and played a better endgame.

Well, that's:
1.) Hypothetical; and
2.) Still not satisfying, right?

The results are the results and I am not saying the wrong person won either game. I simply wouldn't feel 100% satisfied as either player in either game.

Well, yes, Tang weixing was pretty frustrated when he "lost" by 1 point on the board, according to some chinese commentators.

And Park probably has a lot to reflect on, since in both games Tang basically had a really good position since the opening, which is extremely rare for Tang because his opening is really weak for a top professional (according to meng tailing anyway).

Yes, I think I mentioned earlier that Park was not satisfied with game 1 due to a mistake in late opening. He said it was all losing go.

This is partly what I mean in that neither players can be 100% satisfied.

What ultimately matters is the result, regardless of what could have happened, but winning isn't always satisfying.

That statement has been false (because fractional points can occur).
I don't know at what point the Ing rules were changed to abolish these fractional points.

That is simply not true
http://www.usgo.org/files/pdf/IngRules2006.pdf

Did you follow the fractional points link? If fractional points occurred for the first Ing Cup, in 1988, how are rules from 2006 relevant? I can give more evidence, but maybe you just misunderstood something? If you have GoGoD you might look at 1988-08-23b.sgf and 1988-08-23c.sgf, and see results B+1.83 and W+6.6.

I really don't understand all these different rules. What's the point of the penalty rules? Why can't everyone agree on the same rules and be done with it?

Both players feel they could have been up 2:0, but in the end both will take the 1-1 result and wait for October to decide this thing.

Making people agree is hard.

Yeah, i get that but still. When i think about the uniformity of rules, ranking etc. in chess it makes the siyuation in go seem like utter chaos.

The US (USCF) and international (FIDE) rules of chess are slightly different, occasionally causing confusion.

There are also multiple ranking systems (USCF, FIDE, BCF (British), etc.), with some of the same issues that go ranking systems have. For example, my rating is currently 2009 in the USCF system but would probably be only 1900-1950 in the FIDE system.

I agree that the situation is probably worse in go, though.

Why is there such a large gap between games 1 and 2 and the rest of the final? It seems that it would be much easier to follow the thread of the final, so to speak, if the games were held at a similar time. I could see one or two days of rest between the games, but two months?

Maybe it is supposed to build suspense? I find it annoying also. Maybe it has something to do with scheduling the players around other tournaments.

It's probably just for media exposure. Dividing the tournament in three or four parts seems better from the sponsor point of view.

The Bailing Cup final is similarly split: http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/bl.html

A side note: the last 5 times Ing Cup had ended 3-1 for the final.
