Shusai's "Shikatsu Myoki" Now Available on Sensei's Library

Post by logan »

Honinbo Shusai's classic problem collection "Shikatsu Myoki" (New Life & Death Brilliant Stratagems) is now added to Sensei's Library. It includes all the problems and their solutions. The intended audience is 5d and above; but as normal anyone can try them, such as presenting them for fun at a local go club.

John Fairbairn also mentioned having an e-book version near completion last year. It will likely be more in-depth (with more variations and historical context), so hopefully those interested will check out that version too.

Sensei's Library wrote:New Life & Death Brilliant Stratagems (新案詰碁死活妙機) is a classic problem book by Honinbo Shusai in 1910. It contains 168-problems divided into four thematic sections. The intended audience is 5d and above, with a difficult slightly below that of the Igo Hatsuyoron.

Table of Contents
  • Killing (73-problems)
  • Living (44-problems)
  • Ko (38-problems)
  • Capturing Races (13-problems)

If it’s just the problems and solutions, no comments from later authors, then I think it may be free meanwhile, at 102 years. DOn’t know whether there may be heirs who claim any rights, though.
