I've been playing a few games against computers recently due to lack of time for online games, and I was wondering what computer go you all think plays the most like a 'real' opponent? I.e. plays least wild moves in the early game, and even maybe makes occasional mistakes in local fight reading?

At DDK levels, GnuGo works well.

Crazy stone deep learning play very human like, at least at kyu levels. The weak levels has been trained on kyu level kgs games for this purpose.

But it's not open source. You have to either buy the pc version or use the ios/android version and buy server games (a few euro a month).

Sadly I think I'm somewhere between GNUgo and Fuego, where Gnugo doesn't really challenge me much, but I have no idea how close or far I am from beating Fuego because MCTS means it basically is always winning by 0.5-2.5 points

RE: Crazystone - I don't mind paying for good software, but part of why I prefer open source is I run linux exclusively. CS is windows only (on desktops)

Leela is about 3d on kgs. It is not open source but it has a binary for Linux.

I can attest that Leela works well on Linux. Leela also has a system whereby it will automatically adjust handicaps based on your win/loss record, though that won't help you if you're looking for an even game.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm not necessarily looking for the strongest computer, but one that emulates 'normal' moves you might see against a particular level of opponent. For example even the very weak computer players are often insanely good at reading out life and death.
