Hi,

anyone knows where to find these Japanese rectangular bowls - here on the cover and also on page 13
(Ranka Yearbook 1991), used on 12th World Amateur Go Championship
http://goo.gl/0F1cqf

I've seen plastic rectangular bowls, but looks to me these are made of wood. Anyone knows where to find them?
Many thanks in advance

I haven't seen those before, but my first thought was that they might be called "square boxes" rather than "rectangular bowls." A Google search returned these boxes: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/megu ... nd_item_en . Those appear to be unfinished wood, probably not what you have in mind.

There is a note on that page (imperfectly translated from Japanese)...
Quote:
Please note that sometimes because it is somewhat stiff feeling in new condition the lower body cover lid, Tung is not originally tough in secular use lid cover with lower body comes loose.

My guess is that means the lids on square wooden boxes should fit tightly when new because they will loosen up with use. That's something to keep in mind while you're researching this.

Those rectangular stone containers might be shogi piece boxes : http://www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~goban/engli ... html#top9f

Shogi piece boxes are much smaller than the two above photos. I believe these are containers designed to fit bowls and the pieces are put in there as an alternative use.

Hi, thanks to everyone who responded.

Not sure how they might be called, but looks to me they are rectangular :) - see page 6 from Ranka Yearbook.

Definitely not boxes for shogi pieces, I have them and the box is much smaller.

And I've never see container for Go bowls separated, it's always for 2 bowls, like this one
http://www.kurashinokura.co.jp/754

Maybe they were made only for WAGC 1991 :)

Hi,

WAGC '90 (Ranka 1991) was held in Hiroshima, and I googled "go bowls Hiroshima" kanjis. Here's one or two links to your taste:

My wife bought some organic soaps recently for gifts which came in similar boxes. Maybe you can just look for non-Go stuff and concentrate on packaging? I bet it will be much cheaper than buying boxes which are specifically marketed to Go users. The soaps were not very expensive.

In the Go Weekly blog archive, I found suspiciously familiar go bowls in the photos taken in 2014 WAGC in Korea. No further information about those either...

Thanks Vesa for correcting WAGC year, and for finding Korean rectangular bowls.

I can easily made those, and will probably do it in the future.

Thanks to all who responded to my question.
