Hello,

this will be my first Malkovich game (ever). I'm so excited, I just can ... should stop singing now and make my first move. We agreed on

  • 6.5 komi
  • no opening books
  • (from my side) one move per day
  • to be fair, friendly and have fun
(I'll change/edit this list, if I have forgotten something)

Hi,

since I'm trying to improve my go I'll focus my game on a few things, i.e. will hopefully check those/think about them before I make my move:

  • What is my goal? I should not make moves without a particular purpose. Found this quite obvious but somehow inspirating topic in the introduction of Davis Tesuij.
  • What is the consequence of my move -- on KGS I often play moves without thinking enough of the consequences.
  • What is the status of my groups? The groups of my opponent? Urgent before big moves.
  • I'll try to count or guesstimate a score at the end of the opening (move 50+) and from then on every few moves.

These are a lot of things to consider, but on the other hand I am in no rush. I'm really interested how this works out and hope that I can learn a lot.

Not to sure how to use diagrams "yet" but will update when i figure it out. (meh i used a sgf)

As for myself. most of you know me from GD or KGS as prophet19
I started go by playing turbogo after my wife bought the "birthday board" eventually i joined kgs were ive been taught by Tinstar (CGA Vice presedent) and Shygost.
Ive been playing around 7-8 months or so and have hit a 9-11k level.

My Standard opening to this kind of move. I normally don't like diagonal games. I play with a more passive style unless i can get what i want by being agressive.

Hello Pogo,

this thread talks about creating diagrams, hope it helps. By the way, I really like your "How I become addicted to go" story :)

One other thing about making moves in diagrams. I currently quote my last move, add Pogos and make mine to prevent seeing his hidden comments. Is there another, more practical way to make moves?

Hello (possible readers),

most of the times I do not have any idea of the proper term for a particular shape or situation but I will be more than happy to learn about them. So feel free to correct me.

I often play openings on the 3-4 point because I want to have the possibility of territory at the beginning and can not porpoerly handle the (kind of) purely influence of 4-4. I've chosen :b3: because it shapes out a nice insert apropriate word here (framework?):

Below the move your opponent played, there is 'show diagram text'. If you click that, it will give you the code for the board he played, which then you can edit. Then you just have to change his 'W' move to 'O', (to remove the 'I just played here' mark) and play your own move. That's also the fastest way to make multiple similar diagrams.

In my opinion, the difference between c and d is that d is a bit more agressive and pushes the white stones more. I hope, that after :w2:

I can play in the last corner, even though it leaves the corner a bit more open.

In the end, my decision to play a was based on the assumption that I take the corner more severe...if white follows my thoughts :D and I will keep sente.

:w4: would be overconcentrated. With a two stone wall, white must go one space farther.

In general, this kick - whether from a 3-4 or 4-4 - is bad unless white is already being pincered here.

Anyway, I'll unhide this comment at some point in the future so mic can learn from it.

Attachments should almost always be answered locally. Black Q5 next would be enormous. You should not just leave your threatened stones like this.

Yes, urgent plays before big plays. Attachments (tsukes) are urgent almost every time they occur on a lone stone.

I'm not very happy with this (obviously). I'll get out of this corner in gote and suddenly does the lower right corner look a bit ... bad, unefficient, clumsy?

At first glance to some people, this move may look slow - but it is in fact very large. The White stone goes from an approach move to a zombie stone with a bit of aji in 1 move. Also, it makes Black's corner fully protected and solid like a rock.

However, I can understand why Black played the approach - 2 is also very large. In fact, I would dare say that 2 is just a bit larger than 1, not significantly.

In general, this kick - whether from a 3-4 or 4-4 - is bad unless white is already being pincered here.

Anyway, I'll unhide this comment at some point in the future so mic can learn from it.

So what is the better play in this situation, then? This is some thing I don't feel bad about playing, though my opening is very weak (some thing I've been trying to work on--and thus the question ;)).

Loose rule of thumb is jump the number of stones in your wall + 1. So from 1 stone, a two point jump, 2 stones, a 3 point jump etc. The rule is designed primarily IIRC for 3rd line plays, but it's a useful guideline.

Frankly, I doubt the over concentration in shape is going to make any difference to a game at this level anyway :P

I believe this odd looking joseki is the preferred reaction. At least locally. My guess is that in a professional game you wouldn't see this joseki emerge just yet when there's still an open corner, though. Black has good influence on the right and has cramped white's star stone on the left, so I think black comes out ahead.
