I have been experimenting with opening at 3-4 again after a long time of playing the chinese 4-4, 3-4 opening. This is my first malkovich game... lets see how it goes...

I have very, very limited experience playing diagonal fuseki, and fuseki isn't my strong point, so I'll keep it simple and go for a parallel fuseki. Almost all my experience again is with hoshi points, so the 4-4 point in the bottom left fits nicely into my comfort zone.

depending on if I decide I can attack and hold sente to play :b5: after the sequence I might do that.. I'll wait to think about it until after white plays :w4:

Hmm, okay, so Jordus like 3-4 points... Well, he has two of them now, so if he makes a shimari with one, I can kakari the other. I'll take the other hoshi point as per my plan.

I thought about attacking first, but I couldnt think of a sequence worth not playing to strengthen my own corner first...

Oh boy, komoku joseki... I wish he'd just played hoshi points :P ! I would've rather approached the other 3-4 stone since it works better with my hoshi stone in the top left, but this one will have to do. Maybe I should've approached that with my move 4? Mmm, not sure. I tend to just go for the empty corner... I think this move or one to the right is probably the best move - I need to approach his komoku point. Letting him get two shimaris is too good.

There are a few option of play...
There is (a) which I decided to play.. sort of standard joseki here I believe... But don't quote me on that.. I have never actually studied joseki yet..
There is (b), (c), and (d) as pincers. I feel that pincers complicate my game for me and try to avoid them when not necessary.
There is (e), I think (e) is a double edged sword. It allows me to run towards the side, but leaves the corner open and still gives white the other side anyways... I chose (a) because I believe with that I can keep the corner and still stretch to the side some in the direction of (e)...

Woo, thank goodness, Jordus decided to choose one of the only komoku joseki I know... I was fearing him two-space high pincering me... Magic sword is not a joseki I want to get involved with particularly with my current skill level :P ... There is a 1d player at my club who has shown me bits of it so I am comfortable with its very basic structure, but still, I'd rather keep the joseki/fuseki simple as my strength lies in the middlegame and endgame mostly. I really need to get better at fuseki - anyone have ideas as to the best way to improve my fuseki play :) ?

A lot of people recommend Elementary Go, Vol. 1: In the Beginning, as well as Opening Theory Made Easy by Hideo Otake. I'll add The Direction of Play, by Takeo Kajiwara to that list of recommendations to improve opening play.

If you feel that the middle-game and endgame are your strengths, why not welcome a diagonal fuseki? It opens the board up to earlier engagements, hastening the arrival of the middle game. Moreover, opening in the top left instead of the bottom right puts black on notice that you have every intention of disrupting his shimari if he doesn't enclose.

Simba:
While the position in my own Malkovich 110 isn't exactly the same, Kirby uses an approach on move :w4: just like you're suggesting. I'm not sure if you're following that game, but take a look. Any questions you might have about that game (or any other Malkovich game), don't hesitate to ask one of the players. These are supposed to be games for learning not just for the players, but for the observers as well. :)

Standard joseki, aiming at setting up a base for my stones on the right with an extension on move 12. If white prevents the extension, I'll attach to his komoku stone. Comfortable either way :) .

I think the normal variation here is usually white playing (a) black responds with (b)... i dont think this changes anything much though...

i expect white to play next around (a)... at which point I will then attack... probably in the bottom left corner... something like the variation in the diagram, maybe 5 at (b) instead...
