My first objective is to spread my stones around. So many black stones everywhere make me uncomfortable. I want to see white on every side.

The point of my move is to attack the corner, put pressure on Black's side stone below, and to have an easy access to the center. The placement is a bit unusual (R14 would be normal) but I think it's OK for a high handicap game.

If Black touches me with :b1:, I might even ignore it for a short while. I really don't want to start local battles before I plant my stones on most sides. It is too easy for Black to launch a good attack if I start doing something locally. Then Black will most likely get thickness, and the game will simplify for him considerably. That's why I want to spread my stones around. They will erase any thickness Black may build after we start fighting.

If Black pushes further with :b3:, I will treat my stone there as a reduction move and attack the other corner with double approach. I don't mind giving black a bit of territory. It's thickness I'm afraid of.

I agree with dusk eagle, that move seems hard to deal with. Maybe on 9 stones it would be easier, since I can run out with the middle stone in case of a pincer, but I don't know here.

I expect either this pincer or something similar, if he plays near that corner. An approach on any of the other two corners seems good too.

I was thinking about approaching from the other side at first (at a). This would split the board in two on large scale.

However, I want to put more pressure on Black's stones on the bottom right after I attack at b.
I need to create a favorable position for fighting, where I have as many stones as Black.

I could attack at b immediately, but I want to avoid early battles before I spread around a bit.

But walleye would probably approach from the other corner at :w5:, or tenuki.

My move above seems to both claim part of the corner, and support the side hoshi stone.

If I start doing something in the upper left corner, I'm not sure I'll be able to get out of there with sente. I can't let Black reinforce the lower right. If he does, my stones there will lose momentum. I also feel like I need to neutralize the center a bit more before I turn to the upper left. Attacking Black on the right side will help me do that.

Black restricted the movement of my stone at R6, so I need to help it. I could simply jump out and then attack the side stone.

This looks all right but it does feel like I'm giving Black too much easy territory on the bottom. Black is also reinforcing his side stones at K4.
I played the game move to restrict the corner and put some pressure on K4.

Playing on the forth line would have been safer but... safety last, after all it is an 8 stone handicap game.

From your rank difference KGS 2k - 7k I would have expected a 5h game. How come you agreed on 8 stones?

I think the reason is that just a few days ago Phelan was listing himself as a 9k.

I was 9k on kgs when we started the game. I've now gone up to 7k, and had a jump to 6k the other day, although I think that one is a fluke. :-?
walleye, do you want to restart the game with a different handicap?

This is what I expected. I'm now a little worried about the lower middle stone, but I think I still have enough choices of what to do with it.

S4 is the first big mistake I think. It looks pressuring on the nearby White stone, but letting White play the other side as he has both threatens to seal in the corner and effectively pincer the lower middle Black hoshi stone. The jump really should have been the other way at either of the marked points below:

It's awkward floaty shape, but I believe that's because "1" is now rather oddly placed. Black wants to take "a" if he can as well now, but is aiming at the cut at "b" and also properly attacking the R6 stone. Playing to seal himself in as he has is asking for trouble. Simply splitting with "c" instead of "3" seems ok too, but the aji at "d" is a bit awkward to handle.

In my opinion, black's first four moves are all mistakes. Moves three and four have already been criticized, but I don't like the first two moves either. They're not out and out errors, but they are wishy washy moves - they don't take territory, they put very very little pressure on white, and they are very loose extensions (i.e. white has many options to invade/split/create influence out of playing around them.

I agree, but I would call them inaccuracies or something. They are wishy washy, but I think the last two are worse than that - I think the first two just don't do enough, whereas the last two actually help White more than they help Black.
