It is time to pay the bills again to keep the forum going. We are right on the edge, and we will either not quite have enough to pay the bills, or we will be able to pay them but will be penniless thereafter.

If a few people donate their daily coffee budget we will be ok.

Thanks,
JB

PS: And if one of you guys picks up 1.5 billion, I think each of the admins should be in line for a million dollar bonus. :)

I love me some strong coffee

Say, Joaz, could you give us some statistics for L19? How many users? How many active ones? Number of new topics/comments per day or week?
Number of people who have the “unread posts” page in a pinned tab and reload it 64 times daily? :ugeek: (yeah, I know you can’t see that)
What about “L19 premium” with a subscription, and the premium users would be able to set their topic preferences to load 20 or 40 comments per page? :-D

(I hope the other users won’t prick little wax dolls with needles now … I need my sleep ;-) )

What sort of numbers are we talking about here? How many cups of coffee and are you talking and it is Starbucks gourment or the 99 cent cup at the local diner?

Asking me or Joaz?

Quote:
How many cups of coffee
3-5 mugs per day, and then sometimes I continue with decaf, otherwise “Muckefuck” (“Ersatzkaffee”, coffee surrogate made from rye, barley, barley malt and chicoree).

No Starbucks here in the village, and I prolly couldn’t afford drinking coffee there daily. The coffee I drink here at home is relatively cheap: a Senseo machine using the cheapest pads I can get in the supermarket. It may well be that the cane sugar and soy cream I use for every mug are more expensive than the coffee. (Assuming you wanted to know it in all detail ;-) )

Actually, my comment was meant to animate others to donate too … I mean, if even _I_ can donate a small amount, most others should be able to do the same.

Thank you, Marcel, every day I learn something new is a good day, and I learnt something new today!

When I was young I studied linguistics (etc.) for a LONG time but sadly never graduated, out of many reasons, most notably probably my lack of discipline. But my love and interest for language persist :-)

This reminded me of a short paper about etymology and “Volksetymologie” (folk etymology, “popular” etymology) that I wrote 36 years ago. I remember some wonderful stories, for example …
… what the Russian вокзал ([voksal] = “railway station”) has to do with Vauxhall, a district of London, and that again with Falkes de Breauté (died 1226),
… why dough is related to paradise,
… what grog (the hot Rum toddy that I like to drink when I have a cold) has to do with the cloak that Admiral Vernon (1684–1757) used to wear (and how again the name for that cloak originated from a French word), and, related, what grog has to do with the nickname “limeys” for British people.
Today you can find all these stories on the ’net, at that time I had to sit in the university library for hours and hours, and write BY HAND!!!1

It’s fascinating how words often take a long and winding road through time …

How much does it cost you per year to run this site?

I was asking Joaz. I was thinking that most people will not donate. So if 10% were to do so then it could be $10 or $50 each at one cup per member.

Perhaps I missed this, but how does one donate exactly?

In the top right corner of page, just opposite to the L19 logo, there supposed to be a Donate button. If you do not see it, maybe it got killed by an adblocker or something…

I chipped in the equivalent of 2 Starbuck coffees (or a mug of sensible Long Ching. I don't drink coffee.).

Joaz, please continue the game with drmwc. The last time I checked, the handle of my axe shows signs of rotting.

I'll give a dollar for each move played this month :)

Of course; I think the same.

That’s why I decided to give $20 (would that be four Starbucks coffees?) and asked for some numbers.

Yup, that’s also why I disabled any adblocking for L19 :-)

Sure they are  I meant for the bills to keep this forum going. Would rather like to spent soon enough than have nothing to spend for anymore ;)

I seem to recall about 150 to 180 USD/year. It is more when the admins embezzle funds for pizza and beer.

Cheap bastard. The month is almost half over.
Make it a full 30 days and you have a deal. :)

Well, I never buy coffee, which is way overpriced. I make my own at home for less the 10 cents a cup. I guess I will chip in a few dozen cupfuls. :)

Sure! And $2 for amusing empty triangles.

Probably the wrong thread to acknowledge that I once spent $12 on an espresso.

Though my typical cup is made at home. The beans cost $.75, the filter costs $.08, and I'm not going to calculate the cost of water and electricity, or amortize the equipment involved.
