Sorry to hear that. Very young. Though I've never met him, I remember seeing that photo of Mr. Hall's.

A great loss for the world. There are few people who have done as much for go as T Mark Hall has. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

So sad. He was an ambassador for go, and his presence at the US Go Congress was always appreciated. My condolences to his family and to our John Fairbairn.

To the world go community, T Mark was not a leader, volunteer or organizer - he was a fixture, he was infrastructure. Mechanical words perhaps, but they reflect how he had become a foundation supporting us all. "According to GoGod" has become, for us, as ubiquitous as Hoyle, or Emily Post - imitated (literally) but never equaled, certainly not in the love and effort put into it - a product of a remarkable and enviable friendship.

It's a very sad day for us too, the go community.

I hope we will meet him again some day because

Everything
what comes from the womb
will rest
in the boat of twilight

(a passus from Gilgamesh poem)

T Mark's work on GoGoD has been incredible, and his presence on these boards was always funny and insightful. I never met him, but his comments created a vivid impression of his personality.

Online playing schedule: Every tenth February 29th from 20:00-20:01 (if time permits)
A sad loss indeed, and a shock to hear. It has been decades since I last talked to him in person (before I left Britain in 1977) but I have played and talked to him many times online over the years. Frequently, in the days of the London Go Centre, I needed a place to stay when I went to London and stayed at the apartment he shared with Brian Castledine and Jim Bates. They were always hospitable and I have fond memories of those days. I remember him telling me, when I was still a kyu player, that the only book he ever read before each tournament was In The Beginning. I also remember the first time I saw that old goban referred to in the BGA article. It was just sitting in his room with a cover and he casually told me where he has got it. I remember thinking, in awe, that he must be something special to have received it. I never really knew him very well (I was usually the guest of Brian) but I feel as though I did through all that he has done for the game.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I was fortunate enough to meet Mark a few years ago in Korea. A fine fellow. :) He will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him and by the whole go world.

That's terrible news. :( I'm glad I got to talk to him a bit at a recent go congress--he was a really nice guy. My thoughts and condolences go to his close friends (such as John Fairbairn) and family.

Such a loss to his family, friends, and Go in Britain and abroad. I saw him at his last tournament, the British Open earlier this year, and whilst his illness had obviously taken its toll on him he was still his familiar jovial self and beat all the Brits he played, losing only to 2 strong Chinese students. His work on GoGoD with John Fairbairn was truly amazing and as HKA says "according to GoGoD" has entered the lexicon.

Thank you T Mark, may you rest in peace.

I'm very sad to hear this news. I have many good memories of T Mark Hall from the US Go Congress over the years. He was reading Go books until close to the end; his last messages to me reported typos in “Shuko: The Only Move”.
I'm glad we were able to include the GoGoD collection in SmartGo in time; his legacy will live on.
