1001 GoGoD games for your Coffee Break #7 (15 Jan 2013)

Post by TMark »

On one of the rare trips where both John and I were in Tokyo at the same time, naturally enough we haunted the Nihon Ki-in and a famous bookshop which specialises in second-hand Go and shogi books. On that occasion, John drew my attention to one book as something of interest to me. It was a book of games between a teaching professional (Kawai Tetsuyuki, born 1936-01-06) and the members of the club he ran, the Tesseki-kai, one game per member and it had been produced as a tribute by the members for their teacher. Kawai’s father, Kikuji, had also ran the club until he had fallen ill and Tetsuyuki had taken over. Three generations of the family became pros as Tetsuyuki’s sons, Shoji and Shuichi also qualified and joined the Nihon Ki-in. More details about this and other clubs and associations can be found in the GoGoD Encyclopaedia.

Also in the book were a couple of his professional games and this one, where Go Seigen came to the club and everyone got a chance to play against him. Black’s first 9 moves were played by Kawai and then each of the 33 members would play two moves in rotation. White gave 50 points komi and I imagine that there was a fairly convivial atmosphere in the club, but Go still won.

Have fun!

I've read about that game before somewhere - a true gem.
