Today’s game is an illustration of how things were, through the medium of the joseki in the top left corner. When I was recording games from the Korean Yearbooks (and cursing their many printing errors) from 1992 onwards, there were many variations of this joseki being tried out in Korea in 1992 and 1993. I then saw a comment by a Japanese professional sometime around 1994 in Go World that the first time a particular sequence had been played by professionals was X. Of course, it was a variant of this joseki being playerd for the first time in Japan. Nowadays, there is much more knowledge of what is going on in each country and what experiments are being tried.

Best wishes.

That's strange that that joseki is so recent. The result looks rather normal. I wonder which move it was that was new at the time? I suspect it might be :w8:, but I won't be back at home until tomorrow so I'll have to wait until then to see (unless someone else figures it out ;-) ).

Side note: At some point, I really should set up an ssh server on my home computer so I can actually access GoGoD while away from home. Maybe if I write down my intention to do so here I'll actually remember to.
