John Fairbairn and I were once in the Yaesu branch of the Nihon Ki-in, looking at books, when John pointed out a large-format 300-page collection of games from Yamaguchi prefecture. I bought it and found, although nearly all the games were by local amateurs, there were some hidden gems, like today’s game from Yamashita Keigo before he became pro (he was 12). We also have a game he played in 1986 against Takao Shinji. A year or so later, John went on another trip to Japan and, on his return, presented me with a copy of the same book. Sometimes it is difficult to keep a track of exactly what we have in our respective libraries.
