I thought this was seki, but I was seeing it wrong. The White stone at 1-2 isn't connected to the rest.

If the problem was not in the corner, but at the side, your suggestion would end in seki. In the corner-shape, Black can give atari from the outside, so Black's three stones inside form a dead eye-shape. At the side, White's group has two liberties left inside. Black can give atari only by creating a shape inside that consist of four stones in a row. Capturing these four stones results in a living shape for White. |
