Are there any custom goban makers who might be willing to make a hexagonal goban?

Interesting idea. Have you played any games on one? How large would it need to be to have 361 points?

Well that's the number of points on a traditional 19x19 goban.

How many points did you have in mind?

If by professional goban maker you mean someone whose primary business is handcrafting high-quality boards out of kaya, I think you're going to have trouble getting what you want - besides the language barrier, the boards are allowed to dry for a really long time before they are finally sold.

But if you just mean a carpenter who takes custom orders, why wouldn't he make one for you?

Thanks for the responses, guys. Yes, a high quality kaya board is what I want. Basically a two inch thick, hexagonally shaped board with a honeycomb pattern on it, with a 1/2 inch margin, and possibly little feet underneath. It's for Oust (http://www.marksteeregames.com/Oust_rules.pdf), probably my best game, and the one I most enjoy playing. It's almost always played on a base 7 hex hex board, and the stones would be placed in the cells, not on the intersections.

I want this to use at the sidewalk cafes on University Avenue in Palo Alto, where I have lunch and tea almost every day. Sometimes I get a game going online on my iPad. The goban idea is a little misguided since I don't have anyone to play against, but... I still want it.

Well, I suppose it couldn't hurt to ask Kuroki Goishi if they're willing to do it...

The two nearest regular hex sizes are 331 and 397.
