It would be really nice to have. I don't like having to keep changing my computer volume, because I need to hear certain alerts (an IM program mainly), but to get the right volume for system sounds CGoban is too loud.

In windows (vista) you can adjust the volume for each programm separately. (so no need to change it inside cgoban itself)
I use that sometimes. It works fine for me.
I would guess there is something similar on MAC's

No, that's not the case. In general, every program I have that plays sounds (other than system beeps) has a volume control. CGoban is the only program I have this problem with.

Bump.

I would really like to see this fixed; it's a major annoyance. Wms, any comments? Would it be that hard to add a volume control to the app?

I agree that this would be nice. I've noticed on some online lectures (Guo Juan's), there are independent volume controls for both voice and move/stone volume. Really a nice idea. And although Ubuntu often has independent application volume control, it doesn't seem to work for java apps--at least not CGoban.
