I've been doing well with the resolution in my last post, but it's very easy to slip up. Today I played a peep followed by a knight's move. Two seconds after playing the knight's move, I realized I'd only read one way to cut the knights move, in a correspondence game, no less. |

This was a strange game. In the lower left corner, I blundered badly. I'm still not quite sure what to play there. Maybe atari at B3, then black captures a white stone in a ladder? Or can I connect and take a huge corner? After that, my questions are: 1) did I play alright in the lower right? 2) What was a more reasonable approach for Black in the bottom center? 3) When my opponent prematurely resigned, how do you assess the game?

You could consider n4 instead of s4. Black has nice influence on the bottom, so the s4 territory doesn’t seem as valuable, relatively speaking. At the end, I think you are winning, but the bad part is your bottom center group can get attacked, so he could get some unknown amount of plus points from that. |

I played a tournament yesterday, with good results: I played no-komi against a 1 kyu, gave 3 stones to 6 and 7 kyus, and played even against a 1 kyu, winning all four games. Aside from the results, I think I generally played well too. Maybe the exception was one of the three stone games. We played really fast, and I had a good attack before overplaying and falling behind, thankfully I was able to create a complicated fight, and my opponent wasn't able to handle all the groups. I've been playing quite badly in correspondence games (lost 9 out of 10 in a row earlier this year). I think the difference is that I'm grabbing time to check the game on my phone and playing a move when I'm not really focused. Also, during my last game, I started staring at a corner position I've played dozens of times. I know White is alive, but couldn't think through the attacks and how to live. I think b, c and d are not hard, but I wasn't sure what the response to a was. Edit: Added a black stone to the diagram to make it clear the cut isn't relevant. |

I like Knotwilg's answer... Though, that cut at F15 is screaming at me - it could be worth it to take a "seki" in sente, so that you can whip out that cut at F15 - depending on what the rest of the board is, you might not have a seki for long |

Thanks, Knotwilg. Kirby, that could be interesting in some cases. In this one, I just got lazy making the diagram. Black had already connected before white descended on the outside. |
