I started learning go about ten years ago after watching Hikura No Go. I reached 3k and then stopped playing. I got interested in the game again after the AlphaGo-Lee Sedol match. I am 1k on OGS right now and have found myself hit a plateau.

Other than doing life and death problems every day, I want to try to improve by studying pro games. The thing is I will quickly forget the variations/explanations after watching a long commentary...So I thought I would start a thread to record things that I found interesting in pro games. Hopefully you guys can learn from them too!

This is based on a commentary by Weiqi TV.

This is the last game of the ten-game match between 潜伏 (Ke Jie) (playing black in this game) and XIUZHI (Park JungHwan). White just responded black's approach in the bottom and then black played on the top left corner. But that was just an endgame sequence, why did he play that so early?

White clearly got more points in this variation than the actual game. But this would eliminate the ajis such as the attachment at a or the push and cut starting at b. So black knew white's not gonna choose this variation.

If black plays the peep later, for example, after white exchanges 1 to 7, white is not gonna play a like he did in the actual game because the aji is already gone.

In short, that was good timing by black.

This is based on the commentary by Meng Tailing in an episode of 歪歪冲9 (a Weiqi TV show where an amateur player plays a game on tygem (live) and then he reviews it with her). It's not a pro game but I think the position is interesting so I've decided to post it here.

White plays a very common probe against the 3-4 enclosure and black extends. White can come back and live in the corner later by exchanging white a, black b, white c. What should black play if he wants to kill off the aji?

This is a game between 風雨(B) and Master(W). Black just played the shoulder hit. How would you respond?

In both variations, white loses the potential to develop a framework.

So in the actual game, Master responded with a pincer! After black connected at 4, white solidified its shape on the top and then came back to play the tiger mouth on the bottom. White successfully maintained its framework in the bottom left quarter of the board.

This is a very common pattern that appears in the orthodox opening. I wanna show some variations that I learned from a commentary by Chang Hao 9p on a game between Ke Jie(B) and Park Yeonghun(W).

White has two possible responses to black's invasion, a or b.

But if white chooses a tight pincer, that one stone doesn't have any aji left with white's tiger mouth strong shape.
This is a better variation for white if black really chooses to re-approach (so in the game he didn't).

Online playing schedule: Every tenth February 29th from 20:00-20:01 (if time permits)
If you only took up the game again within the last month it seems that to say you have hit a plateau seems a little exaggerated. I think of a plateau as being stuck for a prolonged period of time, say a year or at least 6 months.

More likely, you quickly got back to where you were 10 years ago and are at the base of the mountain. You now need to start the climb up. Whether the mountain has a plateau on the top remains to be seen.

But your thread is certainly a step in the right direction.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

You're probably right. I actually just stuck at the same level for 2-3 months. I shouldn't be worrying about that too much. I guess I am just looking for ways to keep improving.

Thanks for your comment. :)

Here is another common pattern appears in the orthodox opening. This appears in a game between Choi Cheolhan (B) and Shi Yue (W)

Why white 9 doesn't hane at a?

If white hanes now, black can cut off a white stone. After white lives in the corner, black can attack the one white stone on the top right corner.

Even if white defended with the marked stone, white still can't hane. That's why in the game black was able to tenuki and approach the lower left corner.
