Good evening, all.

If you're reading this, you're known to the Australian Go Association as a tournament player, or you're in one of the many go mailing lists around the country, or we think you might be interested. :) This will be posted out at regular intervals, please forward it to anyone who wants to know about Australian go and repost at will.

NEXT FIRST CLASS TOURNAMENTS - http://www.australiango.asn.au/Events.php

1st Sydney Spring Tournament, Sunday 19th October, Surry Hills, New South Wales (see sydney.baduk.org.au)
4th Gold Coast Classic, Sunday 26th October, Helensvale, Queensland (rsvp to horatio@go.org.au)
2014 Wellington Open, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November, Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.
37th Australian Championships, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December, Sydney City Go Club, Surry Hills (Sydney), New South Wales
35th Queensland Championships, Saturday 28th February to Sunday 1st March, University of Queensland (Brisbane), Queensland

The Australian tournaments all attract selection points towards qualification for the Australian teams at the various world championships (see below). We aren't just interested in these first-class tournaments; we want to know about all the other tournaments your club runs, and any online events. The 2014 New Zealand Open should just have finished on Sunday 12 October in Auckland, and I look forward to hearing the result. This year sees the first spring tournament from Sydney.

ONLINE

The Australian room on the Online Go Server - http://online-go.com/group/261 - now has 47 members from 22k (silvia.loveza, Western Australia) to 6d (jackguo, Sydney). This server supports regular online go (like KGS) and also correspondence go (for the time-challenged). Join usssss....
The Australian Go Ladder on OGS has eight competitors - new reigning champion is Mr Newby (6k, fielding 3 challengers) with newcomer matjet slaughtering his way up the ranks.
The Australia Room on the KGS Go Server is also going strong - if you'd like to organise online events there, talk to Matthew Crossman (matjet) the room administrator.
There is an Australian Go Association board on the famous Life In 19x19 go forum. If you want to discuss Australian go (or bag the AGA) this is the place to do it.
The Queensland vs New South Wales friendly game results are out - this round was on Sunday 14 September - and a solid 5 victories for New South Wales against 1 for Queensland (kudos to Jason Mackay for preventing the whitewash). All ranks welcome, one more round before Christmas; talk to David or Yoko on Facebook or at their clubs to join in the next round. If you can play the game at all, we can find you someone to play with.
The australian-players@lists.australiango.asn.au email list ([AusGo]) is for announcements to Australian go players. Post anything you think might be interesting - it's moderated to filter out the spam.
twitter.com/australiango is now a thing. Follow it for more real-time news than this monthly newsletter. @message it to pass said news on. :)
New Zealand Go Society's web pages have finished relocating from the old wiki to the new wiki.

CLUBS - http://www.australiango.asn.au/Clubs.php

Gold Coast Go Club is having their annual tournament in a fortnight. We anticipate competitors from as far south as Lismore and far north as Brisbane, but don't let that limit you.
University of Sydney Go Club has been formally ratified by their student union, and has celebrated by dropping the (Future) from their club name. :)
The meetup.com group for Sydney go clubs is in regular use by Sydney City. What about the university clubs?

INTERNATIONAL

Learn Go Week was a roaring success by Australian go standards: events in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Perth (!). Nothing from Melbourne, Adelaide, Auckland or Wellington, but I'm sure they'll catch up next year.
The 9th Korean Prime Minister's Cup in September saw New Zealand place 20th (Doyoung Kim 6d) and Australia place 46th (Aaron Chen 2d from Sydney). The full story at the KPMC web page
The 2014 World Pair Go championship is this month, October 24 to 28 in Tokyo. The team from Australia are Amy Song 3d (Sydney) and Wei Xu 5d (Melbourne). Kudos to the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne senior players for organising at such short notice, especially Gold Coast for interpreter support on the ground.

....and that's all the news that's fit to print. If you have some, share by return email or hit up @australiango on twitter. :)

Cheers,

Horatio
