There are several ways to attach SGF files to your posts. Use the "sgf" tag to attach them with the "compact" eidogo theme. Use "sgf-full" to use a wider, more full-featured layout. You can also embed a problem with the "sgf-problem" tag.

The preferred method is to refer to the SGF file by URL. For example, you can link to a game from the KGS archives.
Code:
[sgf]http://files.gokgs.com/games/2009/3/26/muchen1999-TheCaptain.sgf[/sgf]

You can do the same for SGF files that you attach to your post (see below for detailed instructions). For example:
Code:
[sgf-full]https://lifein19x19.com/forum/download/file.php?id=167[/sgf-full]

Here's an example using the problem mode:
Code:
[sgf-problem]https://lifein19x19.com/forum/download/file.php?id=168[/sgf-problem]

You can also paste the SGF data inline, though you may run into size limits with SGF files larger than a few kilobytes. You can use inline SGF data or URLs with all three embedding modes.
Code:
[sgf-problem]
(;GM[1]FF[4]CA[UTF‑8]AP[CGoban:3]ST[2]
RU[Japanese]SZ[19]KM[0.00]
PW[White]PB[Black]AW[ba][da][fb][cc][dc][ec][fc][ad][bd][ce]
AB[aa][ea][ab][cb][db][eb]C[Black to live.]
(;B[bb]LB[ca:A]C[Correct. Black is alive (white can't play at A).])
(;B[ca]
;W[bb]
(;B[bc]
;W[bb]
(;B[ba]
;W[ac]LB[bb:A]C[Wrong. A is a false eye.])
(;B[ac]
;W[ba]C[Wrong.]))
(;B[ac]
;W[bc]C[Wrong.]))
(;B[bc]
;W[bb]
;B[ca]
;W[bb]
(;B[ba]
;W[ac]LB[bb:A]C[Wrong. A is a false eye.])
(;B[ac]
;W[ba]C[Wrong.])))[/sgf-problem]

Detailed steps for adding SGF files as attachments:

Find the "Upload Attachment" section on the post screen. Click "Browse" to select your SGF file, then click "Add the file" to upload the SGF file as an attachment to your message.
Attachment:

An "upload in progress" window will pop up briefly while your file uploads.
Attachment:
step2.png
step2.png [ 27.17 KiB | Viewed 3166768 times ]

After the file has uploaded, you should see that it is attached to the post. You can upload additional files if you're adding more than one. Then you should click the "Preview" button.
Attachment:
step3.png
step3.png [ 26.29 KiB | Viewed 3166768 times ]

You'll see a section in the preview area that shows your file is attached.
Attachment:
step4.png
step4.png [ 36.56 KiB | Viewed 3166768 times ]

Right click on the download link, then choose "Copy Link Location". The exact wording will depend on your browser. This is the URL for the SGF file that you've attached to the post.

Finally, you can paste the URL between the sgf tags like so:

If you click "Preview" you should now see the eidogo player.

They don't appear permanently unread for me... If I mark everything as read, or I read them, they become marked as read...

It was doing this for me until I went into another subforum (I went to off topic) and read this thread there. Then it stopped doing that for me.

Do you guys know how to post .sgf files in other forums such as tigersmouth.org? I really enjoy that feature in lifein19x19.

The forum requires a viewer plugin(for example for eidogo).

A workaround for forums without such a plugin is uploading the sgf to eidogo.com and link it.

Are there instructions for navigating the sgf viewer?

For example, I can use left/right arrows on the keyboard to progress back and forth through the game, but when I encounter a variation, how do I navigate to it? Up/down arrows go to start/end of game (unexpected?).

[Insert obligatory "Google it!" message here]

From: http://code.google.com/p/eidogo/wiki/KeyboardShortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts for quick navigation and variation selection:

    Right arrow -- go forward
Right arrow + shift -- go forward 10 moves
    Left arrow -- go back
Left arrow + shift -- go back 10 moves
Down arrow -- jump to the end
Up arrow -- jump to the beginning
    Backtick (`) -- pass
Variations can be selected using 1-9 or, if the variation move has a label, using the label's first alphanumeric character (A, B, C, etc).

And look at that - I actually learned a couple new ones (the navigation with + shift). Thanks! ;)

yeah, thanks... no idea what to google for, since did not know its eidgo related.

so if there are no labels, then variations are unnavigable (except with a mouse)? it feels like a more common default expected behavior would be to use up/down arrows.

If there aren't labels, I believe the variations are just 1,2,3... and you can use the number keys. At least I don't recall encountering a case where that didn't work.

Take a closer look ;) "Variations can be selected using 1-9 or, if the variation move has a label, using the label's first alphanumeric character (A, B, C, etc)"
1-9 is default and if there is a label you can use the labels first alphanumeric character ;)

Celebrir, he asked about when there are no labels. ;)

Now that I look at it, guess I made an assumption about what people are saying. Now that I've read all the comments again, I've gotten myself all confuzzled!

hyperpape wrote:

Should have mentioned this (hyperpape's note above). It's a little annoying without the tree (am I missing some variations?!), and it's led me to spam the 2 and 3 buttons in some problems/game commentaries. If I really want to dig into a game with lots of complicated variations, though, I just use one with a visible game tree.

So the end note - you can hit the actual number keys, you don't have to click on them with the mouse! Let's make sure this is clear. Same with the actual letter labels (just hit that letter).

Greetings,
this is really helpful.
But, you have to have an url from the KGS archives in the first place. Where do I get that (apart form the KGS archives...)
I need to be able to post a link to a game from there but I can`t find how to do it.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
Buri

When you find your game here : http://www.gokgs.com/archives.jsp , you can right click the "yes" under "viewable" and copy the link location (or link address, depending on your browser). Then you can post like this:

Code:
[sgf]paste your copied link here[/sgf]

As an alternative to that, you can download the file, and then upload it here following the procedures fwiffo outlined in his first post under: "Detailed steps for adding SGF files as attachments."

The instructions posted here work, but if you don't read them through and just try to go from memory/intuiting the way the UI works, it's a bit clunky. Here's the process I followed last time: I attach a file. There's an option to place inline. But that's the BBCode for an attachment. No URL.

Code:
[attachment=0]ggg-intermediate-110.sgf[/attachment]

Ok, I'll use "copy link" by right-clicking on the filename under "posted attachments"

Code:
[sgf]http://lifein19x19.com/forum/download/file.php?mode=view&id=4032&sid=ccd2c7742515d25e52ff9cbac1f13b3e[/sgf]

Wait, that's invalid game data.

So now, I can preview, get the link, and attach it via an sgf tag.

Victory!!!

Oh yeah, there's an attachment with my post now. I don't like it cluttering up my post. It's not part of the BBCode markup of my post. If I try to delete it, I lose the file my sgf references :(

You can just host at gokifu.com or wherever you want and link to the sgf file in the sgf tags. It's more work so normally I don't bother to do it but it's an option if you don't want the attachments box.

For purposes of posterity, it seems better to host it on this site directly, so that the games aren't lost to the posts if the other site goes down.
