I have taken a short break from burning disks so that I can announce that the Summer 2013 update of the GoGoD database is on its way. There are a total of more than 77,000 games with over 1,000 from 2013. Delving back in history, we have discovered a further 17 games of Hashimoto Utaro, 12 games of Kitani Minoru and 11 more of Go Seigen to add to their "Complete" collections. If you wish more information, or wish to order, please contact me at tmark@gogod.demon.co.uk, or check out our website, address below.

Best wishes.

You know what, TMark? You should team up w/ Anders Kierulf (of SmartGo fame) and create iGoGoPad, I’d immediately purchase :-)

Greetings, Tom

Check SmartGoKifu, if you are interested. We are already there!

Best wishes.

Yes, I happily noticed that. But it’s only the game records and not the complete GoGoD, I’d also love to have all the background articles, etc. For me, like for you, Go is not just about the game and winning and getting better at it.

Nevertheless I’ve PayPal’d you the money for GoGoD 2013 just af ew minutes ago, partially hoping that my little contribution might give you a little more leeway for thinking about iGoGoPad but without any expectations (I mean: no obligations). But as I wrote to you privately, perhaps an inclusion in Anders’ SmartGo Books might be easier and would do the job just as well (though I really like the name “iGoGoPad” :-D )

Greetz, Tom

I regret that I will be at neither Congress. The only way to buy is online.

Best wishes.

Money have been sent via Paypal then :)

EDIT: I haven't "ordered", just sent money via paypal immediately but it consists of my name and address, so I guess it is enough?

I have my disk for Summer 2013, and am very happy with it.

The only problem is that the suggested method of "installation" is to copy all
the files from the supplied DVD on to a hard drive. When I tried this using
Windows Explorer, the program told me that it would take nearly 5 hours to
complete the copy. The reason so much time is needed seems to be that Windows
uses several optical drive head movements to find and copy each file, and
there are more than 78000 small SGF files on the DVD.

An equally simple approach on another computer running Debian Linux turned
out to be equally slow. Not wanting to thrash my optical drives for that
length of time, and possibly risk damaging the DVD, I found a way of
efficiently copying the whole DVD on to the Linux computer's hard drive without
thrashing the optical drive, and it was then easy to copy the SGF files
to the Windows computer via a USB memory stick.

The details are hidden below. Does anyone know a good Windows-only solution?

These operations were performed as the root user. That and other details may differ
on other Linux systems. The OS will need to be configured with the kernel loop
driver, which may be present as a Linux kernel module.

The optical disk is device /dev/sr0 on my system. After inserting the drive,
copy the whole volume to create an ISO image file, as shown below.

Code:
dd bs=4096 if=/dev/sr0 of=/home/user/gogod-2013.iso

This copies all the blocks using the optical drive sequentially, and should
only take about 5 minutes. Then mount the ISO image file using the Linux loop
device, and copy the content to where it is needed.

Code:
# Create a temporary mount point.
mkdir /mnt/temp
# Mount the image file on the new mount point, using the loop driver, and specifying read-only access.
mount -t iso9660 /home/user/gogod-2013.iso /mnt/temp -o ro,loop
# Copy the contents from the image to where it will be used.
cp -af /mnt/temp/* /home/.
# Dismount the image file, remove it from the hard drive and remove the temporary mount point.
umount /mnt/temp
rm -f /home/user/gogod-2013.iso
rmdir /mnt/temp
# Eject the DVD.
eject /dev/sr0

There may be ways to do this on some Linux systems without using the BASH
command line, but this is the way that I know.

I then used a compression program (rar) to create a compressed archive
of the GoGoD "database" subdirectory. The result was only about 100
megabytes in size, and was quickly transferred to my Windows computer using a
memory stick. I used Windows Explorer to copy the "gogod" sub-directory directly
from the DVD to the Windows computer, which only took about 40 minutes.

Hope this helps somebody.

I call for a non-disk-based distribution. A downloadable archive or something.
Perhaps Games of Go on Tar would be its name... or just GoT - Go Tar.

I do, however, think that spending effort on something like an app. targeting an i-Device would be a huge waste. If you want to copy the content onto a device, there are plenty of existing apps to read PDFs and SGFs and other standard file formats and and app would only lock you into that platform.

My workaround (for GoGoD Summer 2012): Create an image file from the disc (e.g. by using ImgBurn), took me around 7 minutes. Open that file in a virtual drive (e.g. by using Daemon Tools) and now copy everything on your harddrive - took me around 3 minutes.
