Everything from the 3-3 to tengen (5-5) are seen. The board is so small that you cannot avoid your opponent. There really is no "opening" in a 9x9, just a sudden and violent fight, so don't be surprised if you end up with everything dead because you are likely to both be fighting hard to kill each other.
