 nextoriv 5k+: Hi!

I get 3 stones here. I don't believe I needed 3 against this opponent. I do think my IGS rank is too low. But I have to play games to build it up so, here we are.]RE[B+Resign]LT[]NB[22]NW[24]RR[Waiting_5Min]

;W[oq]WL[51]
;B[np]BL[55]
;W[or]WL[48]C[From what I found online after the game, this move is not considered part of normal joseki. I really don't like it for white here. I thought for a while about how to proceed, however.]
(;B[po]BL[589]C[I decided I wanted influence, since white seemed so hung up on keeping his corner territory, I'll give it to him!]

;W[mr]WL[24]C[This move seems slow, but it does prevent me from dropping down and getting influence toward the bottom.]
;B[qm]BL[572]C[So I take influence toward the right.]
(;W[fq]WL[21]C[This seemed like poor direction to me. The bottom is not large after N2.]
;B[cn]BL[555]C[I respond because I want to remain solid. I want white to give me an excuse to use my wall.]
;W[cf]WL[17]
;B[di]BL[530]C[I played the high pincer here because I want all of my stones to be working together, and I think this does that.]
;W[ci]WL[13]C[I have never seen this move before. It also doesn't seem to be in online joseki databases as a standard joseki.]
(;B[cj]BL[470]
;W[ch]WL[9]
(;B[dj]BL[456]C[Seemed like the only move. Not only is it solid, white has the ladder.]
;W[bd]WL[4]C[Now I was torn. I looked about the board and I saw only influence. with some territory for me in the lower left. I wanted to ask my opponent a question: how much influence can I have?]

;B[pc]BL[355]C[So I change direction and offer to let him connect in exchange for sente.]
;W[rc]WL[588]C[He plays this strange move.

I don't think white has ever studied joseki.]
;B[hq]BL[274]C[This move was a sort of probe.]
(;W[jq]WL[575]
;B[dq]BL[244]C[So I took the corner profit. I counted and this makes the game about even territorially by my estimate.

White has 16 points in the bottom right. About 8 points on the top left. And about 6 points in the top right.

Black has about 24 points in the lower left and 4 points on the top.

When looking at the balance of influence, however, this makes it a hard game for white. I don't think he's gained any ground against my handicap stones.]
;W[hp]WL[567]C[White moves to connect on the top. This makes since because he needs influence.]

;W[dl]WL[543]C[Then plays this move.

This seems like the game losing move.]

;W[cm]WL[427]C[White attaches to my corner and seems to be working against my 3 stones. They are heavy. If I defend the corner they can be harshly attacked.

Then I remembered that Li Zhe game. The one I've been memorizing.]
;B[hi]BL[453]LB[fi:A]C[If white wants to cut off my stones at A, go right ahead. I'll make so many points in the center he'll never catch up to me!]
;W[ik]WL[420]C[White needs into my center.]
;B[jl]BL[421]
;W[bn]WL[416]C[Then he comes here. I read and read and read and then...]

;B[dr]BL[260]LB[gl:B][jq:A]C[But I'm alright. I have miai to live or capture the 3 stones at A.

;W[ir]WL[553]C[White tries to kill me.]
;B[hr]BL[170]LB[fr:A][kr:B]C[After reading, I decide this is the move to live. A and B miai, my favorite kind.

White quits at this point. He does not formally resign. He reads for about 4 minutes and then just leaves.

So I won by fortfeit.]
;LB[ch:D][cj:C][gl:F][po:B][fp:G][bq:E][or:A]C[What can I learn from this game?

First, I need to remember why I play the way I do - as long as my opponent isn't asking for too much I shouldn't be afraid to give it to him. When white played A for territory I can play B for influence.

Second, I need to continue to study joseki and shape. My superior knowledge of joseki allowed me to keep up with my opponent, but I did make the mistake of playing C instead of D. Even if white's move is not joseki I should understand why by truly understanding the joseki.

Third, I need to continue to be flexible in my play, but without breaking. My surrender of the corner at E in exchange for cutting off the F group was great. But it could have failed horribly if the G group died. I admit I did not read all the way to it's life and death after deciding I had miai for eyes and capture.]OS[])
