PW[AlphaGo Zero]PB[AlphaGo Lee]C[2017 Oct 18

A big day when Deepmind releases the news on alphago zero, along with 80 more self-play games

I'm going through move by move making comments so I don't spoil it for myself

highlights:

move 6
16!!!!!
]RE[W+Resign]
;B[dd]
;W[pd]
;B[dq]
;W[pp]
;B[nq]
(;W[oq]C[even more aggressive]
;B[np]
;W[pn]
;B[jp]C[there is a serious issue at R3 (or S5 according to the recent alphago paper)]
;W[co]C[W is still playing very actively]
(;B[dl]C[hard to find where the best pincer is as alphago doesn't normally pincer, but B hardly wants to defend when P3 has already reduced the value of the lower side]
(;W[fo]C[very standard classical japanese joseki, we've never seen alphago play this before, probably something to do with the P3 strategy]
(;B[cp]C[very alphago, but humans have invented it over the last decade

this is surely also saying that P3 makes the lower side less interesting as B is stronger, so B is less inclined to defend there.]
(;W[do]C[completely direct and good shape, compare the fact that alphago played the solid connection at the end of the standard 3-4 joseki]
;B[fq]C[W needs to deal with this weak eyeless group right now, but how?]
(;W[gm]C[I tried and tried, but never managed to guess this move

revolutionary shape to defend the shape well and get out with just one move

humans just don't have as good a sense of the centre

W is trying not to fight too hard, just make good shape, and there are clear follow ups at G3 (W has the ladder at the upper right) and D11]
(;B[qf]C[P3 makes this good direction

defending the lower side seems too slow and defending at D11 seems to leave B8 and hence few points]
;W[gq]C[ooh, tenuki]
(;B[fp]C[shape]
(;W[dp]C[natural shape, my 2nd guess, but I'm still not sure what W was afraid of just blocking

oh I didn't see that R14 was a ladder breaker, that makes sense now]
(;B[gp]
;W[cq]
;B[cr]
;W[bp]C[W emphasises the L&D of this group and probably a little aji around H4/M4 (especially if W gets P2)

B seems to get a lot too though (primarily sente) not having to spend a move defending at G4]
;B[ql]C[normal, but giving up the corner aji too easily perhaps?]
;W[cc]C[the most recent alphagos play much more actively for territory]
;B[cd]
;W[dc]
(;B[ec]C[old human style]
;W[eb]
;B[fc]C[modern alphagos seem to think this shape is unacceptable for B]
;W[fb]
;B[gc]C[right now I note the weakness in W's shape around F6/7, and potential B3 ko. B G8 may be a good move. W could play F10 to defend it, but that gives up points

the lower right seems somewhat urgent as B's potential in the centre grows if W has a weak group

otherwise, an invasion of the left side seems an important point, D12 is most obvious

comparative the top right is smaller as the top side is small]
;W[gb]C[!]
(;B[hc]
;W[di]C[when W is sufficiently solid, B doesn't seem to have a shape here.

B would like to fight for efficiency via E10 or G8 or F7, but nothing looks like it works.

If not, then F9 seems shape or F8]
;B[qq]C[the left side does look pretty important to me, but I guess B thought there was no good move anyway, and this move is pretty severe

however, as W seemed to have no good move to defend the lower right (probably S6), it is slightly painful for B to settle it.]
(;W[nr]C[wow that's active, this will concern the aforementioned aji with G3

B is really feeling the pressure]
;B[mr]
;W[ro]C[woohoo I guessed right

somehow even after B playing first, the corner has lots of territory

it looks like the P3 move is working well, certainly very well with G7, or is it that R8 was slow?

or it is that I am still missing aji in the corner? Hmm, S4 can be answered by R4 though, so B can't expect much better than capturing O2 in sente. (which is still pretty big). Other ideas are to play P5 or S6 first, or even Q5 sometimes]
;B[or]
;W[pr]
(;B[pq]C[doesn't this blatantly lose points?

I did wonder if W might tenuki the O2 capture as the S5 2nd line move is good for eyespace. I suppose B is worried about that

also this doesn't necessary lose much as there is plenty of aji and plenty of ko threats - B3 looms? (especially if D8 ends up dead]
;W[op]
;B[ns]
;W[qr]C[W already has 20+ clear points on the board

the lower side is about 20 points with plenty of potential (e.g. P6 shape)

The number 1 concern is the D8 vs D11 fight

and number 2 is Q16 vs R14

On the left, I'm increasingly getting the sense that C13 is a surprisingly big point, but I suspect that is just because I don't have a sufficient feel in the centre

Again B3 is surprisingly big too]
;B[nc]C[ok, a fight with high stones means it is hard to find a follow up on the left side?

or is this helping the left side fight too (helping grow B's potential/attack?)

I envisage O16 now, but W also wants sente for the left side, but I don't see how that is possible

hmm, maybe the crude tiger mouth variation? hmm, no I don't like it]
;W[nd]
;B[md]
;W[ne]C[all expected]
(;B[oc]
;W[pc]C[as expected, the corner is very important despite the bad shape - B has issues on both sides too]
(;B[re]C[alphago's novel idea, this showed up vs Meng Tailing in the Master series

the eyespace is more important than you think

the result can easily end up the same though]
(;W[gj]C[finally we get the answer

if this is all territory, this adds an extra 15 or so to my count, maybe 10 for the bad aji everywhere (F6, B3, C11, B11, F10)]
;B[pg]
;W[rd]C[if this is the shape anyway, I can see why W didn't want to exchange Q14/R15 earlier, but then I don't quite understand B's play.

This move appears to say that the push and cut at P16 is not big. Note the severe aji at S17 remains, but as W Q18 is half sente on N17, W is probably ok]
