PW[AlphaGo Zero]PB[AlphaGo Master]C[2017 Oct 18

A big day when Deepmind releases the news on alphago zero, along with 80 more self-play games

I'm going through move by move making comments so I don't spoil it for myself

This is a match between champions

highlights: move 18, 43, 53, 56, 70, 98, 102]RE[W+Resign]
;B[dd]
;W[pp]
;B[cp]
;W[pd]C[so alphago still likes 4-4]
;B[fp]
;W[cc]C[as expected ...]
;B[cd]
;W[dc]
;B[fc]
;W[ec]
;B[ed]
;W[fb]
;B[dj]C[all standard alphago self-play so far]
;W[nq]C[keeping a tight hold on the 3-3]
;B[mp]C[still familiar]
(;W[hq]C[new]
;B[qf]C[this game is now completely new]
(;W[qk]C[woah

alphago never pincers or plays on the side unless necessary, or so we thought

clearly this is something to do with the N4 stone (probably R6)]
;B[nc]
(;W[pf]C[pretty shocking direction of play, but I guess it was always hard to judge which side to play anyway.

This seems to leave the W corner group in the strongest position, (helpful for dealing with the B moyo/ centre fights)

comparatively it is not aiming to start a fight locally]
;B[pg]
;W[of]
;B[qd]
;W[qc]
;B[qe]
;W[pc]
;B[qi]C[of course, but R9 seems to remain in a fine position

though L17 is great to follow up for W now locally, it is rubbish direction compared to G17

But I wonder if W has a more urgent worry regarding the lower side/left side fight

as it is more comfortable for W to tenuki in this shape (W P13 is a natural shape unlike if W attached in the other direction)]
(;W[md]C[solid and proper, alphago knows when to be patient

right now F16 seems a serious threat to naturally reduce the B moyo by cutting B

G17 looks like an obvious move but lets see]
;B[og]C[very rare for humans to play here so early - I've been surprised before when leelabot likes it, but this is rare when B already has a move at R11

but this is a big global move, considering N3, R6 even if W defends the top side

I think it is much less urgent to defend the top side now after this exchange, but still huge. But there are many huge points.

Also what is the shape to defend? L17 or N17?]
;W[mc]C[interesting, so O14 isn't actually necessarily sente

F16 is becoming a blatant issue]
(;B[gb]
;W[gc]
;B[fd]
;W[hb]
;B[gd]C[human standard joseki, but I haven't seen alphago play it before]
;W[ga]
(;B[hp]C[alphago's attachments again

they have surprised us in the past, compare variation]
;W[ip]
;B[ho]C[there are many options for the next move. A simple G3 would surprise me as it loses a lot in the corner

My feeling was to play some probe around C8, but that doesn't seem to make sense as B has prepared the H5 wall

so perhaps D3 or F3? If D3 then G3 to fight (that is the advantage of playing an active move like H4 - it is hard to tenuki from)

or E9?

seeing how to deal with this moyo while maintaining balance in the centre and territory is difficult for humans

right now I still can't find anything better than F3]
;W[gq]C[oh ...

but I thought W still didn't have enough eyespace.

hmm, clearly this is still aiming at the G4 cut, that makes a lot of sense actually]
;B[fq]C[this way there is still plenty of bad aji at C3/B4/C5/D4/D3]
;W[io]C[of course

W needs to counter-attack N4

B's area looks huge, and H3 looks too close, but G18 and G16 already gave up territory. Presumably W will find a magical plan to reduce the left side.]
(;B[np]C[!!]
(;W[mq]
;B[in]C[huh, so confusing]
(;W[jq]
;B[jn]C[W says the O4 N3 exchange is clearly bad in this variation, and doesn't think trying to attack B's N4 stone is sensible, so submits locally and waits patiently:

There is clearly a lot of bad aji at G4, H6, especially with C5, but doesn't W need to defend at P4 first?]
;W[op]
;B[lq]
;W[lr]
;B[lp]
;W[kq]C[a bit of a probe from B as there is some weird aji with L2 or R3 in the future

locally this feels so painful for W, but I guess after these exchanges, W does make plenty of territory and says that B's profit in the centre is questionable. What is the plan though to reduce? I'm still struggling to find a good move. Surely it isn't to cut at H6 directly?]
;B[ek]C[woah, this is solid

this clearly feared a deep invasion

presumably C8? in combination with C5

note that aji around D3/C3 remains

I'd be urgently looking to reduce the centre right now, first instinct around K12, but that then felt too deep, so perhaps N14. O13 fears the cut, but maybe I shouldn't

H16 is big but might be self defeating and bad direction to build the top as the centre is bigger.]
;W[dp]C[ooh

still probing for aji, maybe even cutting the whole thing at H6 in some variations, but more likely the endgame at F2]
;B[dq]
;W[bj]C[so deep! though I guess this is also a probe - I don't expect W can live, but this may give W the required aji to naturally reduce in the centre]
;B[bl]C[hmm, so the G12 reduction looks more attractive now

there is still some very weird C3 aji and the H6 cut is still glaring, but I don't see anything working directly.]
;W[cq]C[yep :)]
(;B[me]C[woah]
;W[le]
;B[lf]
;W[mf]
;B[ne]
;W[nf]
;B[ke]
;W[ld]
;B[kd]C[B's best move was tenuki ...]
;W[nd]
;B[cr]
;W[ch]C[trying to live incredibly deep, given that W can no longer sacrifice this if B plays something like B15 as B gains so much endgame at the upper left]
(;B[eh]
;W[be]
;B[bd]
;W[cf]C[but as long as W can live, W is very happy as B's whole strategy from G16 to H4 to E9 seems questionable

but if it is ko, it will be complicated]
