Kuopio, perhaps you can tell us why you believe Japanese Go to be superior to Chinese Go. Could it be the longer time limits common in Japanese tournaments, which of course allows players to find moves that are not only functional, but aesthetically pleasing as well? Or is it the equipment used in Japan, which I believe to be very beautiful to look at? Could it be Takemiya Masaki's "Cosmic" style of play? Ohtake Hideo's predilection for beautiful plays? Or could it be the "non-style" play of Cho Chikun? Or is it the games of Dôsaku Hon'inbô, whose collection of kifu I've been searching for the longest but have not been able to find  Just last night I replayed through the 1846 game between Shûsaku and Gen'an Inseki, and I must say that I was amazed at the simplicity of the plays.

Of course there are some good things about Chinese Go (which can be discussed on another thread), but as you may already know most of the world is more familiar with Japanese Go. In fact, most of the mainstream Go literature in Western countries is of Japanese origin. So, I respect your preference for Japanese Go. Now I would like for you to talk to me about it.

I don't even know what to think of this Chinese game: http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/34787 It felt like white didn't even realize what was happening until it was way too late.
Seems like a pro who shares one of my earlier defects as a Go player, namely not playing globally. Looks like Zhang Yabo was overconfident at the time and did not do enough to challenge Black for across-the-board influence. White had mostly overconcentrated groups and all of them on the left side of the board. An early invasion of Black's right side would've improved White's chances for victory. As well, White should've made good use of the hoshi on the upper left while there was still a chance.

That being said, a bad Chinese pro game is still more interesting and entertaining than the best amateur games I've seen.
All those years of hard work at the qiyuan are not in vain. I would love to be able to calculate the value of board positions just like the lousiest of these pros.

What I really like about Japanese go is the craftsmanship of their higher priced equipment.
What I don't like is using the word "go" to search for things related to the game. I get much better results on search engines with "weiqi" and "baduk" when I want to research the game.
I play mostly on KGS using mostly Japanese rules. It's the default and most people use it on that server.
There is an interesting quote from JF's Introduction in his book "Gateway to All Marvels" which brings light to why the rules were changed in China:
Quote:
In any case, the game itself also seems to have suffered some sort of upheaval in China soon after the GTAM, in Ming times, when the rules were changed from what we now call Japanese rules (territory counting) to modern Chinese rules (area counting), a revolution which may well have its roots in whatever burst of activity seems to have taken place in the 13th and 14th centuries. The available evidence suggests it might have been simply to stop cheating (by fiddling the number of prisoners). We do know that cheating became prevalent as go became more widespread.

It doesn't really feel weird to me. But, admittedly, some English speakers who don't know the game agree. After they've heard it and used it a couple of times, it starts sounding natural. (Most people I know have made one go pun and then got bored immediately.)

Please don't joke about the OP's spelling, it's what led to his ban on the Chinese forum in the first place.

I'll admit, I found this thread hilarious, but can we lock it? I feel the same sort of regret that I'd feel if I were gawking at a bad accident on the freeway.

Based on this public request, and similar private requests, I'm locking this thread.
The OP won't be joining us for the rest of his life.
