The new Korean movie, The Divine Move, is playing in Seattle tomorrow. I may have to take off work early and go see it.

Go, gambling, guns, girls... well, ok... no guns and very few girls, but its a very violent and bloody movie. But I've seen Die Hard, so that part didn't bother me too much.

The story is about a professional baduk player whose brother convinces him to help him cheat at a gambling club, not knowing that the club owners are doing the same thing. They get caught and the brother is killed in front of him, leaving him to be framed for the murder. In prison, he plays more baduk, befriending someone who can teach him to fight. He uses both his new skills and his old skills after he gets out to exact revenge for his brother's murder.

The movie reminded me a lot of the book Shibumi by Trevanian. The movie is divided into chapters with baduk terminology as chapter headings, so the story progresses from the opening through the end game, for example. Although the story and settings are different, in both stories, the main characters uses their collective baduk and fighting skills -- although there's not very much Go in Shibumi (mostly only the chapter headings).

I liked the movie. The use of baduk throughout is extensive. There are even life and death problems to solve -- that actually involve life or death. I didn't notice any obvious mistakes in the game positions or plays, as being uses as movie props. But I did feel quite sad for all the stones being scattered around on the floor and thrown about.

Not knowing any Korean, I could still tell where the subtitles were a little wonky, just because I knew the baduk terms they were trying to describe. At one point, I thought I heard them mention Go Seigen, but the subtitles kinda missed it. And you'll see them mentioning playing on the points near the edge of the board (like 3-7), when they actually place the stone near the middle of the board.

I've heard and read about other stories of pros helping each other cheat, but mostly dismissed them as anomalies. There was an old famous case chronicled on the old IGS site, but I think that's gone now with the new PandaNet site. And I was a TD for a match years later were the players brought up similar concerns against each other. I did what I could to mitigate those concerns.

But apparently, this cheating at Go is a bigger deal than I realized. At least I haven't had to clean up after a bloody fight at the local club.

I've heard that someone has already posted a solution to the life and death problem, but I haven't seen it yet.

I went to see the very first showing in Chicago, but the projectionist couldn't get it to work. Refunded, but disappointed. Will try again.

Did they censor him smoking?

It is showing in Flushings, NY. Looks like it would take ~1 hour to get there by bus from the NYC congress site. Not sure if it's worth it to spend so much time going out there...

I drove about 30 min each way and I think it was worth it. xed_over probably drove ~1 hour each way.

I translated the Indonesian subs to English using Google translate and made it the correct format for subtitles.
I used Google translate to get it to English from the Indonesian subs. it's... alright. certainly enough to know what's going on. If someone wanted to go through it and correct it, that'd be appreciated.
