I couldn't come up with a good enough title, but had the idea for a thread like this if it hasn't been done before. :blackeye:

In this game, 35 moves have just been played and black played last. The position comes from a random pro game. Your job is to re-create this game giving the exact sequence of moves that the players did to arrive at this position and then tell me where white plays next.

Note: Mixing the position of the corner moves (Such as white plays adjacent or cross corner) and other superfluous things like that doesn't matter.

Ok, if I try to do one of these again I should not look at the post that's already been made first , my answer for recreating it is now unsurprisingly the same as Bill's, except I'd have expected W's corners to be in the opposite order.

For the next move as W, I'm looking at L8 I think, that W group isn't strong enough for my liking, and may as well pressure B at the same time. This is probably where I find out either that the W group is already rock solid or that L8 does almost nothing to help it

I agree with Bill as the most likely sequence. Maybe top left corner first for white but not a big deal. Next issue is did white f3 or approach top right first? I don't think black would have c14 after f3, and j4 would be strange. r5 low shimari isn't going to be played in answer to white starting at o4 so o17 first looks likely. Black might not play the 3-3 right after slide but let's assume he does. Next j4 to grow the Chinese moyo is better than c14, so j4 and f3 answer, then c14 sequence and l4 invasion the m5 kosumi makes sense with n3. For 36 I say simple c5 as black has a lot of territory and I want some too. Other considerations: h17 (no, top too flat), d14 (w kinda owes a move here but rather slow), q13 (for funzies), k7 peep (bodge up centre a bit and make black heavy, but makes black stronger to left and I don't see a profitable attack), f16 (aiming for moyo and j10 cap, but rather vague).

Bill's :b11: should have been obvious to me, but it wasn't. I got 1-10 the same though (except I too played the opposite corners for white).
I totally messed up the joseki in the upper left. Its obvious, of course, once I see it though.

I like this new game.

It kinda does, though.

I'm talking about the first four moves of the game, not joseki. It does not matter since you cannot tell at all from the static kifu and tewari means you'll reach the same position anyways.

Since it's been a day: Here's the answer

You are correct, white did play c5. Go4go didn't let me download the SGF, so I added the info to this file. (It didn't register the 1978 date or 5.5 komi for some reason <_< )
