Google Deepmind also made an announcement today which I think trumps Facebooks (no coincidence in timing I think!), keeping their promise of making an exciting announcement. Their AI beat Fan Hui 2p 5-0 in even games, and they have now challenged Lee Sedol to a match. https://googleblog.blogspot.co.uk/2016/ ... me-go.html

Fan Hui formal games (which he lost 0-5) was 1 hour main with 3x30 secs byo yomi. Fan won 2 of 5 informal games with only 3x30s byo yomi.

The timing is purely Facebook's. Google's announcement was dependent on the timing of the acceptance of the Nature paper, so not in their hands.

Has facebook completely abandoned their idea to develop a go AI?
Darkfmcts3 does seem to have played a game on kgs this past month.
