MOD: Ok, to summarize the points on this thread --

Under the AGA rules, you can have free handicaps if both players agree to it but they are not compelled to play with free handicaps. Normally, most people follow the traditional handicaps. SmoothOper would like to explore alternative non 4-4 joseki at his club rather than just online so he will somehow have to convince his fellow club members to do so. SmoothOper expresses his annoyance that members of his club would not cooperate. Many people on the forum point out that most people would follow traditional handicap as a norm.
