Hey pogo,

I really want to believe this, could you post a video of him playing a whole game?

So many people's doubts would be gone.

You really think someone would put up the whole thread, just to... eh... fake the progress of a young one in the game of Go?

I'm intrigued. Who are all these people, besides yourself?

I believe someone might, but I don't believe pogo would.

Let me just say, I think this has been the most enjoyable thread in a while.

About the 25 kyu rating - seems like SDK playing to me. Maybe the soft rating is why you are having some escapers.

after seeing a game of his a few nights ago i'd rank him at about 14k, he handled the 17k player relatively easy, but still made some odd mistakes even for my level at 10k...so i dont see him quite being a sdk yet as someone previously stated, but i dont think i will be long

If by this you mean i tell him where to go, Thats something i have been refraining to do. as a father i want him to win. but as a teacher i dont want to "cheat" so usually i type at the start of the game "im sorry if i play a bit slow" and go have a smoke.

I do come and check on it after a while to see if there was a resignation/escaper/entering yose.
the only time i opt to coach him is usually when we are playing aganst each other.

Also going out of town tomarrow and monday, if anyone wants to have a quick game with him i can set him up on kgs in about 2 hours

I actually didn't suspect that you told him where to go; but, perhaps acted as his 'conscience', a la making vague references to what's going on on the board that may moderate his focus. I have no doubt that he plays for himself, since he plays better than you do ;-)

hey sorry i dont really know pogo; i am really inclined to believe this. My IRL friends were all saying that its probably fake, and so they instilled doubt in my head.

Certainly, 15k by the age of 2 having been playing for only a few months is one of the few times where I would say, if true, he's clearly got professional potential.

At that rate, amateur dan player by 4 is almost slow progress continuing from where he is, and I've never heard of anything like that anywhere in the World.

As a professional educator I can attest that people do not learn at a linear rate; so, it is impossible to make accurate projections... Especially since emotional factors usually complicate matters. He may shoot up to a very high-level very quickly, and then either plateau for a long time or even regress as he attempts to supersede his past performance. He's one to watch nonetheless ;-)

My son is 2 and a half years old, he can place stones decently (I could make photos of that, too, and any camera manufactured in the last five years can make digital video clips) but he doesnt fully understand the game yet, plus he doesnt have the patience to place stones until a game is finished, even on 9x9. He does bow after putting the stones back into the bowl, though.

As far as I know, very good professionals usually start playing go at about 5 or 6, which sounds realistic since thats the age kids are considered fit for school in most countries.

Coincidentally, so did I... And I beat my Dad at it first when I was 4. Then I gave it up entirely after my 5th B-day---dashing my father's hopes that I'd become the world's next Bobby Fischer. It just wasn't fun anymore, because my Dad had bought books and wanted me to memorize Opening Book sequences and study the game 'with him'. As you might imagine, that's a recipie for burn-out.

Heh, I burnt out at 7.

I came back as an adult and now I enjoy it again, though.

I vote for fake too. Sorry POGO, but even your post on the age thread seems a little fictional - no offence intended. I was being a bit naive I guess.

i do not see any reason for pogo to lie, what does he have to gain by drawing attention to a child if the child did not have potential at go? what if pogo was indeed playing, and the child got good enough where people began to notice, and pogo gets caught in a net of lies, what would he accomplish? furthermore, i dont even want to think he would do something as sick as exploiting a child in order to gain nothing more than a couple oohs and ahhs from people on a forum.
