I would like to propose starting an L19 mentoring program. Here are the proposed details:
By joining, you agree to mentor a single L19 player who is at least 2 stones weaker than you for a period of 1 to 3 months. During this time, you agree to play one game a week with your protégé, and offer at least 5 minutes of feedback after each game. The mentor chooses the handicap and time settings. That's it. Like a teaching ladder with a bit more commitment - also offering the opportunity to get to know someone a bit better. Please use this thread to share your thoughts and experiences with the program. Let's see if we can get it up and running! |

I like the idea, but I cannot commit to the formality and time constrainsts. That is why I prefer to do something similar to this using DGS. There are a few people on there I play in a manner consistent with your idea, which I think is very good. |

Great idea, daal. Time commitment is also reasonably light. I signed up both as mentor and as student. |

I really like the idea but for me the need for weekly live server games makes it impossible with my schedule. I would be interested in doing the same thing on DGS though. Thoughts daal? |

Sure, since both Dr Straw and Boidhre have expressed interest in doing something similar with correspondence games, we can just add that as a choice (done). I would suggest that the participants then agree to a number of games instead of a time period - perhaps 4 - 12 games? Also, I had initially thought that the mentor would choose the protégé and not the other way around, but I guess it's fine either way. Thoughts? |

We could go for mutual consent, too. A shocking concept, but there it is. |

Probably easiest to just let folks decide for themselves. If you enter as a mentor next to an empty protégé slot, then the protégé can choose you. If you would prefer to choose who you mentor, put your name next to somebody who has already entered as a protégé (candidate). |

If you would like to mentor someone, but have some restrictions, for example you would only like to play once a month or whatever, then just put that up as an offer. I'm not shooting for formality, but rather do-ability. |

Fantastic idea, and good to see people enthusiastic about it! As I've mentioned elsewhere, I've only just started playing Go....Still losing those first 50 (100!?) games. I'd be very interested in having a mentor, but think it might be best to wait until I've made the effort to get my head around the basics on my own. |

Fantastic idea! I've hoped for something like this but didn't know how best to introduce it. I've added my name as a mentor or protégé. I'd happily be a protégé to any of the currently listed mentors, but I feel a little awkward filling my name next to an empty slot. Feel free to choose me if you think the relationship would work. ![]() |

You can use Google Drive and the Docs editors if you have enabled cookies and JavaScript in your browser. You must also have one of the two most recent versions of the following browsers: Chrome Firefox Safari (not supported on Windows) Internet Explorer Other browsers may work with the Google Docs editors but you may not be able to use all of the features available in the browsers listed above. |

Opera should have a setting where it lies about itself to get websites to stop being difficult. It has been very long since I last used Opera though so I don't recall where that is. |

I just downloaded Opera* and it worked right away. If you are using an older version of Opera, here is the fix suggested by google: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B1F ... edit?pli=1 *I stopped using Opera when it looked like Facebook was set to swallow it. But since it didn't happen I guess I might give it another look.... |

I had no idea that the latest Opera was the same as Chrome. Did Google buy opera? If so I will stop using it, or at least never update. |

DrStraw wrote: I had no idea that the latest Opera was the same as Chrome. Did Google buy opera? If so I will stop using it, or at least never update. No, what happened was that Opera decided to use code from the open source Chromium project. Chromium started from Google Chrome code minus the Google specific stuff. You don't need to worry about Google tracking you etc with it. |
