Already to start playing go again, studying and all of that jazz.

Started playing a game on kgs, beat a robot, and was like ya, I remember this.

Went to play an 11k, I was low sdk when I stopped playing about 8 months ago, so it looked like it was going to be an easy match.

Went pretty normal, dominated the flow of play and was looking pretty good in my favor. We enter end game and I have a commanding lead and we start clearing up the last few stones and it is pretty obvious he has lost. So this person did what I HAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEE the most about people on online go servers, he started playing in secured territory with essentially zero aji. So I respond to a couple of moves making sure he doesn't mess anything up but he keeps playing there. We are both in sudden death by-omi so I don't have a terrible amount of time to check everything but it looked like there wasn't a big threat so I tenukied filling an open space.

He plays another move in the secured territory and I realize it isn't so secure anymore but that now we have a situation because I tenukied. I end up losing a lot of stones and leave the game without finishing calling him bad names. After cooling down I resigned afterward.

I hAAAAAAAAAAAttttttttttteeeee these type of people. I am completely aware it is my fault that I didn't notice what would happen but it is so insulting and infuriating for people to play like that. I really only see it online, but have seen it in a tournament before in mid-dan level playing which was surprising.

Just as a public service announcement please do not do this, even if you end up winning the game you look like a complete jerk and when you lose which happens the majority of the time anyways you still look like a huge jerk.

Just resign and move onto the next game if it annoys you.

Hi Subotai,

Sorry to hear that.
  • In an ideal world, everyone would be nice, kind, and reasonable to one another.
  • We don't live in such a place.
  • We've never had such a place. (But I heard ancient Rome enjoyed a few hundred years of a very peaceful period, not replicated since? )
  • We won't have such a place for a very long time.
  • "essentially zero aji."
    Is it, really.
  • This discussion has existed since the very first Go servers.
  • And 10,000 years before that. :)
  • There will always be jerks. The question is what we do about it. What is our own mentality.
  • We cannot always change others. Occasionally, we can.
  • We can try to change ourselves. Often, this is quite difficult.
  • "calling him bad names"
So you stooped to his level. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em ?
  • Who is the greater opponent -- the driver who cuts us off, or our own mentality ?
  • To feel annoyed is human.
  • To rant is also human.
  • Essentially two kinds of people: whiners and doers.
  • If I'm not a doer, maybe I'm a whiner.

To be honest: to me it’s NOT the people you accuse who “look like a complete/huge jerk”, and IMO calling your opponent bad names should lead at least to a chat ban on that server.

That doesn’t really make it any better. It’s rather like insulting somebody and then adding a winkie.

Every time you lose a won game you become more persistent when behind, yourself.

in an area with essentially zero aji/was secure ---- > not secure

I think the best thing you can take away from this, is that if you're ahead, there's no reason to tenuki in this kind of situation.

Also, it's part of the game. If you learn to deal with it, you'll learn to get free wins. Same way you learn to read a ladder.

I could say, "I absolutely 'HATTTEEE' people who play out ladders that don't work." "I knew it wasn't working so I tenuki'd their ladder breaker." "turns out the ladder breaker was actually a ladder breaker." "Now I know how to read faster/better to check if something is a ladder breaker and people who play ladders against me are easy wins."

Arguably it's also probably a good thing to learn how to play in byo-omi when your opponent is trying to win on time because they're allowed to do that if they want.

I feel for you. Losing on the last move is highly frustrating. Playing online makes it a tad to easy for people to act like jerks but there isn't much we can do against it.

Yeah it was great. For anyone who wasn't a slave. Or a foreigner. Or a woman.

It can be highly fustrating when we come across people who appear either bent on ruining you day, or so emotionally unstable that they are insensitive to the feelings of the human being on the other side. In both cases, however, it's better not to let the exasperating individual know you are extremely infuriated, the "expected" response, as following your opponent around doesn't lead to a win.

@rant alert@
As noted earlier, it's possible that the person is intentionally attemping to increase your temperature.

You have to understand that this is a trick move.

Ruining your day is the goal-- whether it's acheived or not is completely up to you. Namecalling is always a bad move in this situation, as it's bad shape-- it may seem fine locally, but when under the microscope of whole-board judgement, it's clearly an overplay. The opponent connects to the outside stones while laughing at you in sente, and you just create a heavy group in the center (of your mind). Most of the time, however, this happens mainly out of emotional instability and lack of discipline. In this case, your opponent is likely to respond with the nuclear tesuji, so nothing good can actually result...

So, what the proper tesuji? If you read the kgs escaper policy, you can identify a weak point in your opponents position. Close the game window if you're sure the indivual is aware of his/her wrongdoing. Optionally, you can first make this sente exchange (I recommend you do so)-- Using the most formal english you could possibly conceive, kindly note that in the event of continued breaches of contract, you will happily 'escape', as jovially as you can possibly state it. This counterhane may confuse the perpetrator into good manners. If you really feel that you want to give the individual a good talking to, instead of namecalling, which is useless and unsatisfying, a good endgame continuation is to, a few weeks afterwards, contact the player and politely ask to continue the game. This move is all the more humiliating when your opponent has all but forgotten the game.

The best thing to do, however, is to give a little slack, and avoid being judgemental or even angry, if you can, which may sound daft since we're human beings, not robots, but maybe the person's just not as mentally mature as you are. There is no point in stooping to their level. You could choose to dodge the bite and pat them softly on the head... Or be merciless!!! (Whoa, please only be so if needed) And use the above technique.

Don't let that person win. Play another game.

ps: Ironically, I accidentally lost all of the text nearing the very end. It had taken a while. Quite angry I was, yes. I retyped the whole thing and made it better :blackeye:

Perhaps you shouldn't have played at a time control that had you in sudden death byo-yomi at the end of the game. I generally won't play with anything less than 30 seconds byo-yomi unless the main time is longer than normal.

What does it have to do with the matter above?
Being in sudden death byo-yomi is not something that turns your opponent into a jerk. On the other side, landing in sudden death byo-yomi is hardly rare when your opponent drags the game on purpose in the endgame. Since you can't make him pass, he can actually make sure that you get into lour last byo-yomi period if that's what he wants, no matter which time setting you have.

What is sudden death byo-yomi?

When you're in your last byoyomi period it shows up as "sudden death 30s" (or whatever the length of your byoyomi period is) on KGS. I assume that's what he meant.

But I don’t understand how this combines with Byo-Yomi.

Bonobo, I think some people refer to the last byōyomi as sudden death.
It's not really a "real" sudden death because as long as you play
the required number of moves within that period,
you get another period, forever.
But it feels different from the previous non-final byōyomi periods
in that you cannot let this one run out, or you lose on time.
So some people refer to it as sudden death.

It also has to do with the actual duration:
for short byōyomis, like 30 secs - 1 minute, it feels more urgent
than much longer ones, like 20 moves per 30 minutes (Canadian).
So partly, this "sudden death" label is psychological. :)

If you aren't aware of that, that's on you. It's your job to win, and if you can't secure a win, it's not your opponent's fault for trying something that works, it's your fault that you can't properly defend your territory.

I teach a lot of beginners, and they'll ask me questions about playing in what otherwise looks like my territory.

I tell them all the time, it never hurts to try.
I don't think you can live (or kill anything) there, but I've been wrong before.
If you don't succeed, then the final score is relatively unchanged (for every prisoner I gain, I also lose a point playing inside my own territory). But if you do succeed, then its a really huge gain (and bad on me that I thought my area was secure).

I welcome, and encourage my students to try.
Can't learn, if they don't try.

On a slightly tangential note, I once played a game when I was pretty new to go and improving rapidly. I think I was around 7 kyu and played a game against a player a couple ranks above me, so of course, I took handicap stones. I ended up dominating the game, and my opponent got really upset, saying that I wasn't really a 7k, therefore I was cheating. He demanded that we start a new game and that I resign to make up for his loss. After about 10 minutes of arguing about it, I convinced him to play me in an even game instead. Maybe he was flustered by the whole thing, but I still won quite handily. I don't remember if he resigned properly or if he just quit. I thought the entire encounter was kind of bizarre and amusing. I mean, no one likes to be sandbagged, but if I didn't play and win games at that rank, then it would never improve.

I guess the moral of the story is that some people are just unreasonable. You just have to deal with them with as much good grace and good humor as possible.
