Why can people only join one Dojo on Igolocal?

I know he's said before it's because of how he works dojos. Basically, it's kind of 'voting' for important places. If a location has no 'votes' and no one plays games for a while, it eventually expires, I think? I believe that the explanation was similar to this before, but take it with a grain of salt, as my memory is terrible. Mr. Thomas or anyone else is welcome to correct me. Try checking the igolocal forums also, as they're more likely to have the specific answer.

I Had similar "issues". I had an e-mail conversation about it with the owner of the site.
here is a quote from one of his replies, that should also answer your question.

My reason for only letting people join one Dojo is because I don't want everybody making their own dojo, and then everybody joins all their friends' Dojos, and the whole thing becomes meaningless. Go players are scattered enough, we need to concentrate them, focus them into local organizations. The answer may be to create a larger organization out of your many little Go Clubs. One for the whole city.

I was kind of disappointed by this (and some other stuff), but I guess it is a positive thing for the go community in general.

Yeah, I like the idea of clubs joining. If there were more in one city, perhaps the dojo could say if your in this part people meet here and if your in this other part then people meet here, etc.

Although if two people were intent on being separate they'd be driven into competition.

I don't know if the webmaster of Igolocal comes to this forum, but it is a weird idea for me even after reading his explanation.

The idea of website is to find LOCAL people that's around one's area, but now he wants to "concentrate" them all together. People won't "concentrate" because this website is designed to give only one dojo per person. And as a result, it will only give an unreliable information about dojos.

Maybe it is a good idea to post a link to this threat on his own igolocal forum asking him to join/comment in this conversation.

In Stockholm, Sweden, we have had two different places to play at (depending on the day) for the same Go club since more than 10 years; seems stupid to not be able to enter both of them as Dojos or that the players must chose which one to join...
