Post subject: | Interesting Go Variant |
I'm posting the rules of a go variant here, for anyone who might be interested in the variant. play around with it for a little bit. There's three modifications to the rules: 1. Suicide is allowed. 2. Liberties wrap around the edges of the board to the opposite edge. 3. Star points may not be played upon nor may they give liberties to stones. Well, that's pretty much it. All that's missing is a name for the variant and some beta testers. Any suggestions slash volunteers willing to try it out for a couple of days? *ninja edit* Counting system and komi can be whatever you want. Chinese, japanese, new zealand, whatever. ![]() |

0. Am I correct that all liberties wrap over, and not just the one on the other side? Does the marked black stone have three liberties? Or, even more simply -- is this go played on a torus? 1. Should territory looparound just as liberties do? i.e. Are the A1-A7 intersection black territory or dame? (star points ignored for simplicity) 2. Do the star points in one's territory count as territory? 3. Where is handicap placed? ![]() 4. Would the standard board sizes still be recommended? It seems like something where the star points can be placed evenly would work better. (19x19 is a prime number, so you can't have a reasonable number of star points that remain regular as the torus is rotated. 9x9 works fine, but 15x15 would work better than 13x13.) I'd gladly play a Malkovich in this system once the rules have been somewhat cleared up. |

Sevis, good questions. I'm curious whether it's a torus, too. Maybe some topology experts here can help. It looks like Go+Portal. ![]() How about start with 7x7 and forget about the handicaps for now. See what problems arise, see if you can even finish one game, then try a few more games. |

long time no see. Some rules clarifications: yes, ALL liberties wrap around. The handicap system reverts to free placement of stones by the weaker player. liberties wrap around, Territory wraps around as well. Also, think of the star points as black holes where no liberties can exist, nor any stones can be placed. Any stone placed on a star point is immediatly suicided. I would reccommend 15x15 board size for now. Also, star points can not be counted as territory. nor eyes. |
