Post subject:  Idea: Open Source Comunity Effort for Go Software Projects

Hello All,

After reading through the AGA Projects thread (and hearing variations of this discussion over several years), I'd like to make the following offer:

It sounds like there may be several people who would like to work on software related projects that would help the AGA and/or Go in general. If this really is the case, I'm willing to rent a VPS (low-end to start) to help make this happen. The VPS could be used as a shared development platform for volunteers to work on projects.

Volunteers would need to initiate projects, get together and coordinate their work, manage the server/source code/etc. If programming for projects I am interested in happens in Java or PHP, then I may participate in programming as well.

By using the server, contributors would be committing to offer the projects they create as open source. They might turn into something that stands on it's own, or that the AGA or other organizations could use, or that could be interfaced with or adopted by KGS or Kaya, or whatever.

I may or may not initiate any projects myself. The project I am most interested in is an online player database, open to all, to register/search/find players/find clubs/find teachers/find students/etc, perhaps even with map capabilities like igolocal.net (which seemed to have a lot of promise, but looks stalled to me).

We could ask L19 to host "project" forums for individual projects to help coordinate the efforts.

This may be a great idea that could result in some cool websites/software/services being available to the go community, or it might end up as a disaster that crashes and burns with wasted time, fighting, insults, rolled eyes, hurt feelings, etc. Who knows?

If anyone is interested, raise your hand, and if it sounds like there is enough serious interest, we'll make it happen.

Regards,

RedPoney (yes, my real name, and you can call me that or "Poney" for short, but please not "Red").

PS: Constructive criticism is welcome of course. I'm sure there will be plenty of plain old unavoidable "nay-saying" as well, so feel free not to participate (in the project or the discussion) if you don't think it's worth the time.

I have the domain gospelare.se partly for the same reason.
Currently hosting my private web page http://moh.gospelare.se and the Nordic Go Academy http://nga.gospelare.se

"Gospelare" is Swedish for "Go Players" and the original idea was to offer sub domains for mainly Swedish Go players who wanted to set up a private web page.
I am still mostly interested in Swedish or at least Nordic projects, but will be willing to host other projects that I find interesting too, maybe for a small fee, depending on how interesting I think the project is.

Features includes unlimited disk space and traffic, php, mysql, ftp, ruby on rails, CGI, perl, cpanel, cron jobs...

/Mats

Are you aware of https://github.com/usgo? If you have some server time to donate, you should talk to... ah, I see he's not listed on the officers page. I wonder who else is not listed there... Oh, but he's made a few posts here as seigenblues, I think.
