A funny thought crossed my mind today. Mr Kin, of Igokisen fame, is in many ways like the Matt Drudge of the Go world. (Matt Drudge is the guy who runs the legendary Drudge Report).

Just wondered if anyone else sees the parallels?

You have made an invalid assumption of the sociological impact of this drudge character. While I have heard the name, I think, I have no idea who he is or why you would make such a comparison. Is this a joke? Sarcasm? Legitimate similarities of hair loss patterns or perhaps they both receive compensation for running shoe endorsements?

I see. Are you sure you haven't made an 'invalid assumption of the sociological impact' of Mr Kin?

Anyway, don't worry. It's just an errant thought and a lighthearted comment. I can write seriously about Go in the serious forums.

The Drudge Report is, in fact, one of the most influential news sites on the internet. I rarely look at it personally, but that's partly because I don't live in the US. Here's a random article from the NY Times about Mr Drudge, which might help people see some of the parallels: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/16/busin ... 6carr.html

It was just the third result when I used the magic of the Google, but it's actually quite good. And by the way, about those ads you saw... They're targeted towards you and your interests, not Mr Drudge's. Other people see different ads. Just thought you might like to know.

Yeah, not quite sure why you're getting upset bogiesan.

Although I've heard the name "Igokisen," until today I've never visited the site or really knew much what it was about.

The Drudge Report is little more than an online version of the tabloid newspapers as regards sensationalism and hence not worthy of respect. Mr. Kin's site has absolutely no gossipy or sensationalistic material. As far as I know from visiting it it just has tournament results and game records for download, and is a good source for go tournament results.

That's just what they want you to believe...

One could make the same claims about most news outlets these days, couldn't they? Not worthy of respect is also really very harsh, in my opinion. I try to respect everyone, even when I don't agree with them...

Like Dusk Eagle, I'm not really sure why people seem to be getting upset about this. Perhaps I've misunderstood you? The comparison wasn't intended to be viewed so literally. Rather than criticism it was, if anything, a compliment.

To avoid further distress, I'll spell out the similarities as I see them. Both of them:
  • Use a very simple, but effective design
  • Have the ability to summarise a huge amount of news in a clear and understandable way
  • Are able to access to information that isn't always easy to find
  • Appear to be very productive in terms of the amount of work involved
  • Have been around for a long time and are still going strong.
