Post subject: | The race to 2000 games |
Something of a red-letter week for us at GoGoD! We use various ways to motivate us through the long grind of accumulating games, such as getting enough games to make a player a milligod (1000 games in the database) or believing another game by Go Seigen etc is just around the corner - readers may recall our joy at finding three new Shusaku games recently. One of the very long-standing targets we have had is first player to 2000 games. For many years Cho Chikun has been the front runner by some distance, thanks significantly to the efforts of Chikun-fan Jan van Rongen. But just as the tape looms up we find that he has acquired a dangerous rival. If we count games in which the player appeared (i.e. including rengo/pair go games), Cho Chikun still leads with 1977 games (as of 25 March 2012) and Cho Hun-hyeon still trails on 1942. But if we count only games in which each player appears one-on-one, Hun-hyeon has just taken the lead this week, and now stands at 1939 against 1933 (this is all out of about, at present, 71,450 games). Both players are still active, of course, but the reason for the turnaround has been that we have spent the last few months working through old Korean magazines. Sadly, that source is about to dry up, so first one to breast the 2000 tape will probably depend on current games, which perhaps favours Cho Chikun as the Japanese system looks after its older players rather better than the Korean one (and the two Chos are well ahead of Yi Ch'ang-ho on 1732). As regards rivalries over the board, the Cho Chikun/Kobayashi Koichi one may be famous at 129 games, but is dwarfed by Cho Hun-hyeon/Seo Pong-su at 341 (database figures). Nearly all those were titlematch games and they include dramatic episodes such as the mirror-go games, so maybe it's time CC/KK was shunted into a side-yard. Best wishes. |
