Does anyone here have a rank in Mainland China? Are the ranks per province or for the whole country? I'm going to be taking a rating test on the 23rd of this month. And I'm not sure if I want to apply as a 15 kyu, a 10 kyu or a 5 kyu. It seems as if those three are the only options.

Does anyone know the relation between Chinese rankings and online rankings.I looked at http://senseis.xmp.net/?RankWorldwideComparison But it doesn't seem to be quite accurate. I'm a Kgs 7 or 8 kyu so I should be 12 kyu or 13 kyu. Today, I went to the Go center and beat a 10 kyu player twice and a 5 kyu player, so I'm not really sure what I should apply as.

The 10 kyu and 5 kyu player I beat were 6 year-olds. :grumpy: Maybe they were just intimidated or something.
There were 9 year old 3 and 4 dans picking their noses everywhere haha.

Anyway, I'll be grateful for any help you can give me.

I'm keeping a blog as a train in China at AaronKo.net

Anecdotally, the kyu ranks in China don't mean very much. As a 7-8 kyu on kgs, absolutely take the 5 kyu rank test.

Up to and including 1 dan the ranks in China are definitely weaker than on KGS - mainly because no self-respecting adult here willing identifies as less than 1 dan! However, things get murky at the 4-5 dan level, as there are 5 dans in China that can easily give other 5 dans 3 stones.

I just got back from the Go center's 7:00PM class full of kids under 9. I beat a kid that was 2kyu. Here's the game what do you think? We entered the game into panda tetsuki as we played, I wonder if it fatigued him or something.

His whole group dying is not a result of lack of skill. He already knew he had lost and the teacher wanted us to score it, so he wasn't really paying attention.

That child is nowhere close to being 2 kyu.

Instead of thinking about the rank element, why not take advantage of being in China by playing the strongest players possible at every opportunity?

I would like to say, your blog is very well done and I enjoy reading it and viewing the pictures. I find myself almost more interested in Guiyang barbecue than in your go journeys...

By the way, you are correct about the page of the book you posted being on semeai. The title is: san qi sha san qi (part 2) which means: 3 liberties to kill 3 liberties. The word for semeai in Chinese is 杀气 (sha qi) which means eliminate liberties; not to be confused with 杀棋 (sha qi) which means to kill a group.

Rare to see such games on KGS, but it's typical Wbaduk 9-10k style, so maybe around 5k KGS. Creative and lightning :)

I've found out a bit more about the rankings here in Guiyang. The only way to get rankings here is in the quarterly ranking tournament. the Ranks are 10kyu, 5kyu, 2kyu, 1kyu, 1 dan, 2 dan, 3, dan, and 5 dan. Every ranking tournament, you can only move up one stage. only a certain number of people per group get ranked up. For example, people who place in the top 50% in the 10kyu tournament get ranked upped to 5kyu. I'm not exactly sure what the percentage is, but it's pretty low from 3dan to 5dan.

5 dan is the max rank here. My friend fox, got to 5 dan at age 11, but now plays as 9 dan on Chinese go severs (http://www.Eweiqi.com). He can give some other 5 dans 3 handicap and still win.

These rankings are specific to the Guiyang Qiyuan, so rankings should differ by region.

Also, here in Guiyang, there are no "professionals". They actually are professionals, but they aren't one of the 20 every year that are certified in Beijing as "professionals". Here in Guiyang they have their own rankings for teachers. 6 or 7 dan is the max, it's all very strange.

Hi mogosoup,

Your description of go ranking system is pretty accurate and similar to the one used in Chengdu and I suppose in many other Chinese cities.

Ranks are important for children as a 5dan diploma will help later to integrate the best universities too.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Guyang, which is a famous place for weiqi with its specific weiqi tv program, its weiqi parc ( not active but well, nice decoration at least) the go center (no smoking) and so on.... :)
