Post subject:  Abundance of Ko?

My OGS game against breakfast is almost finished, and I noticed we never had a ko fight (which is probably a good thing as usually the stronger player gains from ko). It looks like we won't even have a half-point ko in the endgame. This got me wondering: what percentage of games feature any kind of ko, and what about only 'interesting' kos (i.e. exclude endgame half-point kos)?

Taking the sample of my last 20 OGS games - 5 of which reached counting, and 3 ended very early (<100 moves) - the numbers are:

No ko: 13 (65%)
Any ko: 7 (35%)
Of which interesting: 7
Total: 20

Is there any database wizard (ez4u ;-) ) who could do something similar across GoGoD?

P.S. Already the first game I looked at the definition of 'interesting' came up: http://www.online-go.com/games/board.php?boardID=338808. Is the o8 ko interesting? I said yes as it is bigger than half a point if black wins it, and white submitted because he realised I had more threats.

Simple to try. Less simple to write up with confidence. :blackeye: An outline of the four searches that I ran is below.

Simply put there were LOTS of kos. However, I am not sure that there were no systematic errors. I clicked through a sample of the games selected and everything I checked was a legitimate ko shape. However, with nearly 150,000 hits on the fourth search, I obviously did not check too many. The four searches are independent so there is no way to tell about duplicate games counted. The safest approach is to assume that the result in search four, 47,780 games, is a reasonable approximation of the total. That means that about 2/3 of all games in GoGoD feature ko shapes, on average something like three of them per game. I say shapes because there are many cases where such shapes arise but are immediately connected in normal play. For example...

This standard invasion sequence produces a ko shape after :w9: but Black normally connects immediately so no ko fight occurs. Nevertheless the position after :w9: will appear in my search 4 below.

Interesting kos occur pretty rarely in my games - maybe a quarter or fewer of games feature one. Seems to me like stronger players tend to encounter more.

Boring endgame kos crop up all the time of course.

I think ko fights are a part of player style and over all strategy, they don't necessarily just happen randomly, in fact there are many tesuji for starting ko's, and many tsumego end in ko.
