Why is it in late summer instead of end of May as it always was?

Because of the earthquake.

That's what Ranka says..

Is it my imagination, or is the average age of contestants getting lower over the past few years?

There is one woman this year. How common is that?

There was one female player in 2012 too (but none in 2011). You can see previous entrants by tweaking the numbers in the url.

Some notes aside:
since the last 3-4 years, the overall organization has improved a lot in the WAGC.

They have this template and had added faster selected games uploads and more up-to-moment results.

So we can really have a close real-time idea what's going on.

How do you know all this? And what poster are you referring to?

Suzanne D'Bel Low Khin Su, Malaysia. She attended the European Go Congress during the second week, where I played against her in the main tournament (I made mistakes in the opening and then fought back in the endgame to win by 0,5 points), in a side tournament and three friendly games (of which she won one). As Black, she likes to start at tengen and use it for attacking, while omitting last defensive moves if tengen serves for remote defense.

I don't get what the purpose of your question is. If you are interested in the matter enough, you can find out a lot about it, either from the people that participate, or from the development of the WAGC site over the years.

Also, and I hope I'm not offering too much personal info, but dankenzon has participated in the WAGC several times, and has reported on them before, so he has had a more inside look at it.

Why the antagonistic response? I was genuinely interested. WAGC attendees are not frequent posters on this forum. The site has improved a little, but it's not really a good resource for up the minute results and information. When they start broadcasting live tv streams then I'll be impressed :)

Sorry, I read your question as putting into question dankenzon's information posts. I misinterpreted. :p

But you're wrong on wagc attendees not posting frequently here. RobertJasiek has attended the WAGC a few times, and I think there are others. HermanHiddema, maybe?

I wish :)

There are several other users here that have participated, T Mark Hall, Javaness, Conanbatt (aka Kaya.gs) and unkx80 among them. And I'm sure there's people here that have visited without playing.

Yeah, true, but they don't write much about the WAGC specifically. I guess they need to be asked specific questions.
