Post subject:  Go/Poker teaching proposition!

Hey guys,

First post so go easy!
I am a 22 year old graduate and a complete novice who has never played a ranked game of Go, but I'm very keen to learn!
My strategy game of choice until now has been poker (primarily No Limit Hold'Em, but other variants as well), at which I have made thousands of dollars playing at very low stakes, enough to see me through university and travel around Europe. I was president at the poker society of my university '12-'13 and have experience handling new players. (Credentials can be provided via pm if required.)

I am looking for an informal (or more formal, if preferred), mutually beneficial partnership, whereby I am taught Go and in return shall teach poker! Both are fascinating games and I am very curious as to what skills are notably transferable between the two. Whether you've played poker before or are almost a complete greenhorn (like I am at Go, haha) then please drop me a message if you're interested.

I am very flexible and details can be arranged on an individual basis.

Mods, I realise this is quite unorthodox and I may well be posting in the wrong section of the forum (apologies), but if you don't ask you never know!

Thanks in advance everyone, I hope I have a long future with this great forum :)

Yes, the 'club leaders' subforum was not a good fit for this post, so I moved it here.

You could always just bet on the go games

I don't think mixed strategy clubs work out very well. Its always just one club that can't find enough members trying to cannibalize other clubs. In the DC area we have a bunch of people that try to do Designer games Oh and Go or Chess, they don't actually play Go or chess at there meetings, though they seem to have the certain lines memorized like. "Go its such a deep and complicated with such a rich history game... yadda yadda" Its kind of like calling yourself a Poker club because you have a deck of cards. I know they just really like all sorts of games, but yawn, I don't care about Settlers of Cattan, or which ever trivial game is coming out next week. I could go for a good game of Poker every once and a while, but Poker clubs always meet at the bars and try to sell alcohol which is kind of annoying especially when you are trying to enjoy doing deductive inference and battle field statistics.

poker is quite popular among several high level go players that I know or know of.
there probably are some transferable skills.

For me personally it's not so much the money or the 'gamble' in poker that gives me the buzz, its the satisfaction you feel from the success of the exploitative counter strategy you develop and employ against your opponents; something I'm sure you guys will appreciate as Go players. If that comes with a little monetary gain, who am I to complain? ;)

I'm definitely looking at this from a coaching/teaching standpoint rather than aiming to build a mixed poker-go community. Simply looking for a keen learner of superior strength to learn from and hopefully teach them to be a winning poker player in return. Any skill-crossover is definitely a bonus!
