Taking big points as you described is greedy, attacking groups trying to kill is aggressive, two different concepts really.


What I mean is that a lot of kyu players blindly charge at their opponent trying to kill their stones with next to no regard for the safety of their own. Taking big points on the board is not greedy, it's taking what you are owed. If you play against a high dan player (6d+) you will notice that they will often ignore your moves that you thought were sente and take a big point instead. This is less obvious when they are playing against someone of equal strength though.

There are some recorded games of pro vs amateur out there. There is a lot to learn from the significant gap in strength because the weaknesses of players much stronger than us become obvious to us.
