Hi! I used to have the GoGod database on CD. My use of it has lapsed for a while, but I wanted to come back and downloaded the new database. Problem? As it stands, it is useless to me. Yes there is a folder of folders on my desktop now, with games sorted by year. But the whole point of the product - at least for me - was that I could fix a board pattern and search for all precedents with that pattern. How can I do that now?

Get a pattern search program such as kombilo.

I tried your suggestion. I think I managed to install Kombilo. I ran Kombilo. It was possible for me to use the graphical interface to place stones on the displayed goban. I also managed to use the "Open" command under the "File" heading to generate a dialog box. I found the folder containing the games (with some exertion: there seems to be a profusion of folders under Windows to that labelled "Downloads"). I managed to get to the game files though and tried to open one. I got back a dialog box saying "Error in sgf file". I've reproduced this result several times, so it cannot be the matter of there being a problem with one particular .sgf file.

Rather than opening a single sgf file you should import the whole collection of them as a database for searching against. See https://dl.u-go.net/kombilo/doc/tutorial.html

The trouble with Kombilo is a hardcoded date limit. You only able to use it with older games for now, until someone updates the installer. I tried to compile Kombilo on Windows, but the task is not for the feint harted and I did not make it.

I like the user interface for pattern searching of Drago better than Kombilo. Unfortunately, it only works on Windows.

Perhaps GoWrite is an option too. My favourite Go editor/pattern search software.

See: http://gowrite.net/GOWrite2.html

Cheers,

Thanks, I gave Gowrite a test run. Perhaps it is for me a good alternative to Kombilo for modern games databases.

So what operating systems do most of you use?

I thought that Windows 10 would be supported by something as simple as an sgf editor, but I'm experiencing no success with either Sabaki or Kombilo.

Windows 10

Sabaki and Kombilo work on Windows 10 (Kombilo with the <2020 bug)

While Drago uses the kombilo library it is not affected by the hard coded 2019 limit of the current Kombilo. Drago is a nice option.
