:b31: and :b33: could be really aji-keshi, as they probably aren't big enough to respond to (ok, I'm talking about :b33: here, :b31: needs a response, but even if :b33: was directly at :b31: I'm not completely convinced White would respond unless there was a serious corner kill threat, which I don't think there is).

:b35: is the obvious "get your group out move" to me, so maybe that's :b31: ? The reason I'd suggest the sequence above is to make "a" less of a threat against the marked Black stones, but it may well be unnecessary, and losing sente here without completely settling your group in the process feels too slow for Black.

Thanks Dusk Eagle, Magicwand, mitsun for the comments. Dusk Eagle, I did see your comment, but was apparently too dense to realize it was suggested as a refutation. :oops: Probably means I should think more about kikashi. Certainly these posts have been instructive on that topic.

So, similar to what topazg said, but with a gentler approach towards aji and ko threats.

By the way, why are you other observers letting topazg hog the limelight? ;-)

I want to hear your guesses too! And you may well learn more by committing to a move.

Some of you might be amused to read that at 31, the commentary say black was "probably disgusted with himself at this stage".

The 32-33 exchange should be a fairly strong hint of what's about to come. It doesn't have much of a relationship with C14 though.

Why do you think white would make that exchange? If you figure that out, you'll find the next move. In other words, which move makes even more sense now than it did for move 32?

I'm still sticking with O3 - the last exchange helps White quite a lot if, for example, Black tries to pincer. I suppose R3 is possible too, as it's less clear where to block now. Either way, I still stand by the lower right corner as the next most important area.

Bah! I wait for an easy move to chime in, and it's still just a 50-50 choice.
I guess I'd block on the outside. All the results end up with Black's thickness looking a bit boring, but blocking on the right makes it look really inefficient to me. I tried playing around with variations, but couldn't find anything more efficient.

I'll be happy to get a big corner. The black stones above seem too close, but I think there's no avoiding that (white 32 and then 34 seems really strong). I don't really want a wall facing either direction, I think.

White plays an interesting move here, it's not easy to find (I don't think I'd have thought of it) but it's worth thinking about this position anyway.

I'll give people some more time before updating.

Any ideas?

So those who wanted to play in the top left had the right idea. This move is fairly unusual, but you can see why white played this way. White has the aji at K18 to help settle a group at the top, if necessary.
