Honinbo Shuei, born Nov. 1, 1852, turns 160 today. Happy birthday!

Do you have any favorite games of his?

I'll start off with this game:

"Woah!, really can he cut?" .... "This semeai looks hard" .... "Oh, it's a sacrifice to make a huge efficient territory".

So strong! :)

It's a master class in 123-moves. The timing of 45 and move 99 are also memorable. And it was a handicap game.

Do you have any favorites you'd like to share?

That one against the young Shusai where he runs out of a net (earlier position you posted on another thread). I don't know many of Shuei's games, I wish John Fairbairn's book was in dead-tree format...

Thanks for sharing this wonderful game. It was hypnotic. The sacrifice strategy and W89 were so magnificent.

Looking through the game, I assumed that you were referring to move 51. 99 and the sequence following blew my mind. A very clear demonstration of why light is good. It's also impressive that he pulled off a similar exchange twice in this game.

Moves 51, 63, and 81 respectively. And yes it's nice that he gives us two lessons in in the power of sacrifice for the price of one. Though I wonder if black should have peeped at g14 before h11 to fix the shape (but it does entail some loss at the top when white answers at h16).

Thank-you Tami, happy you enjoyed the game :) (and everyone else too). I was reluctant to post this thread because of the sad news of Chen Zude's passing on the same day. But it seems enough people downloaded the game for it to be worth something.

Sorry you didn't like the game Magicwand, maybe next time.

John Fairbairn's series covers about 1/3 of Shuei's games, so there are many treasures left to be found for those who would enjoy searching through his games.

Until next year : )

P.S. Here's the game you were talking about Uberdude. It's also very nice.
