I know I'm new, so don't hurt me: The name has way more personality, but it is a mouthful and as a result isn't very catchy; it also isn't immediately apparent as to what it is.

Since there is a decent-sized community for this already, it may not matter. But one of the things that attracted me to GD in the first place was the simple, mainstream-like name.

On the other hand, "Sensei's Library" isn't particularly simple or descriptive, but it works perfectly, so I could just be off-base. In the end, I think we can all agree it isn't nearly as important as having an active and friendly community and responsive/active/non-comatose administration for the board.

I have to say, I find lifein19x19 to be too clumsy to say or tell to people. But them I'm the guy who thought "igoweb.org" would be a good name for a go server.

I think we need to keep lifein19x19 because there are already people here. :) But if we wanted to add a "shortened" version of it, as an alternate name, could we do that? The "19" is the most memorable part of the current name, so I'd keep that.

How about:

talk19
gotalk19
forum19
life19

etc.? "life19" would be a very nice little shorthand for "life in 19x19". Although unless you are told, you wouldn't probably guess that it was a go discussion site.

I've already registered discussgo.com (and variants). How about I just set them up to 301 redirect here? We can keep lifein19x19.com and you can tell people "just go to discuss go dot com" and it'll get them here.

Badaji would be a nice one...

And lets face it, this is a forum about go, which may be played on 9x9, 13x13 or 19x19, (or higher, should we wish to massacre those pesky computers)

EDIT: And I'm feeling exceptionally egotistical right now, but seeing as this forum site is occasionally the "other woman":

misshapen-aji.com

That was one of the funniest jokes I've heard in a while. But I'm a sucker for wordplay~

Don has transferred the history to Life in 19x19 and has said he is willing to transfer the domain name GoDiscusions. Personally I think GoDiscussions as a name is way clearer then Life in 19x19. It is easier, catchier and describes what is happening. Life in 19x19 is a more poetic name but to me it sounds more like a blog name.

Should we make a clean break and start anew or should we just see this as a new start for GoDiscussions?

.com is for commercial ventures. .org is or .net is better. Are either godiscussion.org or godiscussions.net available. That would be better. Don offer to transfer godiscussion.com so maybe tha tcan be redirected for some period of time.

But I definitely think the GoDisussions is the most appropriate name. GoPlayers.org sound more like a play about players. I registered GoPlayer.info at on point (because it was free) but let it drop. My thought had benn that if could have been a place for information about players but I never had the time to do anything with it.

I like "L19".. not very descriptive I suppose but I can imagine saying to someone "yeh I spent all morning reading L19 .. glad my boss didn't catch me" - if I could read it at work  . I'm not really old or really young but it sounds more young than Godiscussions without being embarrassingly so. Also in Cambridge, UK, the Go club sometimes meets in a cafe called CB1 (only been there the once) - apparently the oldest internet cafe in the world.

But is it not called L19. L19 sounds more like a point on the board and as we all know a point in the first line is not usually a good place to play. The full name is LIFEIN19X19, which is too much of a mouthful for my taste. And not only that, it appear to exclude discussion of small board games.

Sure, I understand what the full name is :D , I was suggesting it as a possibility based on how I'd abbreviate it in conversation, or in posts - avoiding the mouthful factor. Perhaps I spend too much of my working day with acronyms though.

Having 19 in the name isn't too bad IMHO even though it ignores 9x9 and 13x13 since 19x19 is the most important board dimensions.

I still like L19! but I really don't mind what it's called as long as it works.

I think that GoDiscussions.ORG would be a great name. It has the attachment to the old name, but the .ORG signifies that this site is a non-profit community venture.

In fact, I like the idea so much I just registered GoDiscussions.org. I'll hold it for the site until we come to a consensus and transfer it to whomever we deem best at no charge if we decide to use it. (Impulsive I know, but when it comes to domains it's best to register first and think later)

I like godiscussions.org, but like I've said before, I wouldn't mind another.

Regardless of what domain name is chosen, as long as it uses 361 instead of 19x19 (cause I want it to hurry up and multiply out) I'll be fine.

Point them all to one site. We don't need to have just one name.

If we're going to re-open this discussion, I guess I'll mention that I still have discuss-go.org.

I think the first question to answer is; what to do about GoDiscussions.com? Do we want to be associated with the old site? Are we going to take Don up on his offer to transfer the name?
