I played a game today and played a joseki that I learned on josekipedia but my opponent made a move that I didn't expect. That move is marked move one in the diagram below. Black seems to get too much influence in the outside. Does anyone have advice on how to respond to move 1? And also any comments on the way sequence that I did choose as White are very welcome. |

First thought is if black doesn't have support on the lower side then perhaps you can defend the other cut, and fight like this: Though maybe black 7 should push a load in sente and then enclose at 10 as the black corner won't die if white didn't get 8 yet. Another idea is to not play 4 locally but play something around the 10 area, aiming to treat the cut lightly and making miai of some attack on black's pincer stone and being able to play your original soild connect without worrying about the double hane cut. Or instead of solid connect play hanging at m7 as that helps a little if black does cut. Or a sacrifice? Lose the corner is not so big if you destroy the pincer stone. |

Thank you for those ideas! I really like move 8 in the first diagram. |
