Probably hard to answer generally, but I'll try anyways: What are some good black responses to the marked approach and when should they be used in regards to the whole board situation. Some comments from me: Backing off is simple, but in a vacuum this seems really good for white. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pincer seems dangerous. Its a two vs two with white getting the first move. Though I like it with a stone around A. -------------------------------------------------------------- Most people seem to dislike kicking even when they get sente, so doing it while taking gote seems even worse. --------------------------------------------------------------- I tried the attach in a game, not fun for me at all. ---------------------------------------------- Most useless wall in existence? ----------------------------------------------------- This does not look horrible, but its similar to the first example, both players get a nice stake, but black still has a weak point and gote. Any comments from stronger players on how they would approach this approach(no pun intended)?. |

Black can tenuki or answer at a,b or c White 2 is not sente, because a and c are miai [Edit: some example games on Waltheri's: http://ps.waltheri.net/718373 (a: 70x 56%, Tenuki: 25x 52%, c: 37x 48%)] |

Could you show some specific "whole board situations", which you have in mind (maybe it occurred in one of your own games?)? In your given position, I would just claim an illegal move (since w obviously must have moved twice) and win the game by arbitration decision ![]() |

Something else to think about: tenuki. If they then double approach the 3-space extension stone might be useful and mean they can play more powerfully, but it's also possible that you can try to make it in the wrong place: e.g. if you attach against the approach stone with the extension and they hane, you extend, they extend into corner and you block then with the usual double approach joseki they might actually wish that 3-space extension was a 2-space extension to actually cover the cut. This is just something I figured out for myself though rather than reading in a book or being told be a stronger player so maybe it's not so correct, e.g. maybe white should play at a instead of 7 to use the 3-space extension? Also black 4 at 5 is another idea for quick living, in some variations the marked stone ends up looking good, in others bad. |
