Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 4th volume in Kim Sung Rae's New Openings of the 21st Century series is out in Korean language now. http://book.daum.net/detail/book.do?boo ... 8995932995 I wonder when Yutopian will continue the English translation of the series. I think Yutopian has only translated up to volume 2 at the moment. |

My understanding is that three volumes have been released in English. Vol. one was under the name "Korean Style of Baduk," after which he changed the name of the English series to "21st Century New Opening." Even more confusing is that for vols. two and three of the English series they used the covers of vols. one and two of the Korean versions. He confirmed this with me through correspondence a couple of years ago. However, I'm not sure how well he understood my question given the complexity of the publication history at hand. There are two other books by Mr. Kim called, "21세기 신 바둑입문" and "한국 바둑 왜 강한가" which I haven't had a chance to browse and compare, so am unsure if they're related to this conundrum. |

My understanding is that the Korean Style of Baduk was a different series which was suspended and then Mr. Kim decided to start the New Openings of the 21st Century Series. http://senseis.xmp.net/?KoreanStyleOfBaduk http://senseis.xmp.net/?21stCenturyNewOpenings The reason why I know there is a volume 4 is because there is rumors of a new Chinese edition volume 3. Vol 1 Chinese corresponded with v1 English version. Vol 2 Chinese corresponded with v2 & v3 English version combined into one book. And the new Vol 3 Chinese should be the v4 Korean edition. |

It's certainly a confusing state of affairs. Here's the relevant part of the Preface. There's also the fact that Mr. Kim told me, in 2011, that all three volumes had been published in English, which only makes numerical sense if Korean Style of Baduk is included in that count. You can conclude from it what you will. Kim Sung-rae, 21st Century New Opening wrote: I previously wrote Korean Style of Baduk 1, a book that covered the Small Chinese Opening and the Large Avalanche joseki. It has been well received in both Europe and USA. By writing this book, I could satisfy the interest that Westerners have in Baduk. Therefore, I feel I have a duty to keep on writing other books as well.
Originally I was expected to publish the Korean Style of Baduk as a series of three volumes. However, I have decided instead to produce a book every 3 years to provide readers the latest information on joseki and fuseki. Therefore, I changed the title to 21st Century New Openings. [...] Subsequent volumes of the 21st Century New Openings are planned to be published simultaneously in Korea and in the USA (English version). [...] I would also like to thank Dr. Sidney W. K. Yuan who helped with the publication of the English version. |
