Hello,
I've recently crossed the Rubicon and purchased a Macintosh after at least 15 years of PC world.
I was wondering which applications would be available on Mac OS X to play go or practice go.
I had a look on sensei's library and checked a little bit the forum archives.

I've found so far:
* CGoban3 (KGS)
* Sen:te (can it access IGS? If so, I didn't understand how)
* Dragon's breath ( DGS)
* Gowrite 2

Did I miss something important for a go player?

See, I only use Sen:te when I want to play the computer because, although it can access IGS, I can't access IGS from Japan (that is, unless I want to pay an annual fee).

I know they're busy, but I'm really anxious to see SmartGo for Mac!!

P.S. Mac also has a free 9x9 Go widget you can get for your dashboard.

No, there's really nothing else. There are hopes that, one day, SmartGo will come to Mac, but Anders has been very busy with his iOS versions.

CGoban works fine, for both playing on KGS and viewing/editing SGF files.

Sente is very nice for viewing SGF files, not as nice for editing. The interface and the stones are much nicer than those of CGoban. But it hasn't been updated in years, and probably never will be.

Just to remind, there is of course the possibility to also run Windows (if you really need some software that only runs on it) either via VirtualBox/VMWare/Parallels or bootcamp.

IGS pandanet's glGo (old now, not sure if its still available)
IGS pandanet's new java based GoPanda
BaduK - baduk.sourceforge.com (haven't really used it, but apparently it can manage databases)
qGo - will connect to IGS

Kombilo - database manager (though I've not been very successful getting this to run, myself -- on any OS; but many people do)

gnugo -- commandline (terminal), but you can use it as an engine with almost all of the above programs (but I mostly only use it with Se:nte Goban)

That last is an important consideration. Working at the command line. What we think of as the Mac OS is more a "window manager" and the real OS underneath is some form of Unix (BSD I believe). That means it might be possible to get any of the programs avaialable for a 'nix OS to run. Usually these are available at the source code level and you'd compile for whatever 'nix is actually running under the Mac OS and then run the executable from the command line.

But those who would be comfortable working at the command line level probably already know this. Probably beyond most "end users" of software. However, in another part of this forum somebody who is working with fuego says he might make available an executable for Macs (with volunteer projects things like this always uncertain and "as time allows")
